You might need to connect your Honeywell RTH9580WF Smart Thermostat to a different wireless network than the one it was originally configured with during installation. Perhaps you have changed the name of your home wifi network, upgraded your wireless network router, or you want to connect the thermostat to a different access point in your home. You can do so by following the procedure below.
Honeywell really improved the WiFi setup procedure for this smart thermostat. No longer must connect to it via a tablet to update the wireless network settings. The entire WiFi configuration can now be accomplished via the RTH9580WF touchscreen menu system. Here’s how to do it.
Enter Wifi Setup mode.
Switch from normal to Wifi setup by first, pressing the Menu button at the top right of the Home screen, as pictured above. Then, use the arrow keys at right, to scroll through the main menu, until you see the Wi-Fi Setup button, as pictured next.
Press the Wi-Fi Setup button, circled in red in the above pic. The WiFi setup screen then displays, as shown next. Note that we have blanked the thermostat MAC address and CRC values, to preserve its anonymity. Also note that normally, this screen shows the status of the connected WiFi network. However here, the OurHouse1 network is not in range (no signal). So we’re going to discard the OurHouse1 information, and replace it with an in-range WiFi network in the following steps.
Press the Disconnect from Network button. The WiFi Network Disconnect Confirmation screen appears, as follows.
Press the green Yes button. After a short pause, the system lets you know that the disconnection from and purge of the old WiFi network and its information is complete, as shown next.
Press the green OK button in the lower right corner of the screen. This takes you back to the main menu, as shown next. From there, use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to scroll through the menu to the Wi-Fi Setup button.
Then, press the red-circled Wi-Fi Setup button. When no network information resides in the thermostat, pressing Wi-Fi Setup initiates a scan for in-range WiFi networks. A brief message displays, indicating that the network scan is in progress. Then, the RTH9580WF displays a list of the in-range WiFi networks it found, on its Select Wi-Fi Network screen, as follows:
Then, tap the network in the list to which you wish to connect the smart thermostat. In our case, we’re connecting to the 937T681J4059H_2G wireless network. The WiFi Password Entry screen then appears, as follows.
Use the displayed virtual keyboard to enter your password. To enter numbers and punctuation characters, press the ?123 key, to switch the keyboard to this mode. The password characters are clearly displayed as you type them, so do this when no non-trusted folks are looking.
When you’ve finished entering the password characters, press the green Done button. This WiFi thermostat then attempts to connect to the selected wireless network, and displays the following screen while it does so.
If no errors happen, such as an incorrect password entered, the system successfully connects to the selected WiFi network, and then displays the following screen. It shows the name of the wireless network that the thermostat is now connected to.
Next, press the green OK button. The Register Online for Remote Access screen then displays, as shown next. If you’ve already registered your WiFi thermostat, you need not register it again, so long as you have not unregistered it. Connecting to a different WiFi network does not unregister the thermostat.
Press the green Done button. The system then returns to the Wi-Fi Setup screen, except that now, the connected network information is shown, as depicted in the next picture.
Press the green Done button. You are then returned to the main menu, as shown below.
Press the Home button at the top left corner of the Main Menu screen, to return to the Home screen, as shown next.
Your Honeywell smart thermostat is now connected to your WiFi network, and the outdoor temperature and humidity settings will update soon.
