The setup and connection procedures for the Belkin Plug-In Wi-Fi Range Extender model F9K1122v1 , illustrate simplicity itself when you have screen shots from an actual setup scenario, as we took here, while connecting our version one copy to our existing wireless networks.
The Belkin firmware automates much of the procedure in a wizard style web interface as you’ll see below. Nearly all you have to do is answer several questions; most of which they supply with acceptable default values. Then, you find your networks to be extended in a list they provide, enter their passwords, and this extender takes it from there. It connects to your selected Wi-Fi networks and repeats them; extending their range as advertised.
The picture above shows the F9k1122v1, connected to and extending our Wi-Fi network. The status lamp on the front (center in this picture), glows a solid blue, indicating reception of good signal from the primary network(s) previously programmed into it, and repeating them as expected. In this procedure, we’re going to wipe it clean of any user-programmed settings, and show you how to program it, “from the ground up,” to extend the networks in your particular environment.
Belkin F9K1122v1 Extender Setup Instructions
1. Reset the F9k1122v1 to Default Factory Values
You may skip ahead to step 2 if you purchased F9k1122v1 brand new.
However, you’ll want to RESET this device if you bought a used one, just in case the seller did not clear out their customizations. Follow the instructions in our Belkin Wi-Fi Range Extender Reset Instructions article.
2. Plug the Belkin Extender into an Outlet that’s Close to your Main Router
During setup, the F9K1122v1 should be physically close to the Wi-Fi access point you’re extending. We situate ours in the same room as the primary router, just a few feet away from it. Once setup is complete, you can then move the extender to the place where you need improved Wi-Fi signal, so long as the extender can still communicate with the primary router.
3. Scan for the Belkin.Setup Wi-Fi Network to Continue with Belkin F9K1122v1 Extender Setup
Once the F9K1122v1 boots (takes roughly thirty seconds), go to your computer or mobile device and scan for the Belkin.setup Wi-Fi network. We found it on our iPad Air, as pictured next. This setup access point is only active during the setup process, and will disappear once you’ve finished configuring the extender.
4. Tap the Belkin.setup Network
Since it is OPEN, you will not be prompted for a password. On the iPad Air, we join it simply by single-tapping it.
Once connected, the Belkin.range front page comes up automatically, as shown next. If it does not appear, then direct your web browser on the device you’re configuring with, to http://belkin.range/ . Once that page came up, we had to scroll down a bit on this page to see the Get Started button.
5. Tap the Get Started Button
This instructs the F9K1122v1 to scan both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz. bands for eligible Wi-Fi networks to extend and repeat.
6. Wait for Wireless Network Scan to Complete to Continue with Belkin F9K1122v1 Extender Setup
While the F9K1122v1 scans for networks, you’ll see the Searching for SSID screen, shown above.
After several seconds, the F9K1122v1 displays a list of in-range wireless networks it found in your area, as shown next.
7. Select the Wi-Fi Network that you Want to Extend
In this scenario, our 5 Ghz. network is selected by default (highlighted in blue). But we’re only going to extend our 2.4 Ghz. network here, for brevity. So, we tap the 937T681J4059H_2G network, which then is highlighted in blue, as shown next.
However, if you are extending a 5 Ghz. network, just repeat this step for that network once you sign in to your 2.4 Ghz. network, as illustrated below.
Note that if your network does not display in the above list, it may be hidden. In that case, press the “I want to connect to a hidden network” button, and follow the instructions for manual entry of your network’s SSID, security type, and password.
Your network(s) may also fail to show up here if they’re physically too far away from this range extender. Their signals may therefore be too weak. To solve this problem, move the extender closer to your primary Wi-Fi access point. After it boots up, tap / click the “Refresh” button above, to force the range extender to rescan for eligible networks to extend.
However, if you do see your network, as we see our 937T681J4059H_2G network above, tap its entry in the list to select it, and then tap the “Next” button. The password entry screen then appears, as displayed in the next screen shot.
8. Enter the Password for your Chosen 2.4 Ghz. Network
Enter your primary network password for the 2.4 Ghz. Wi-Fi network that you’re extending. Warning: Your password will clearly display on this screen as you enter it, so do this step where no one will see it that you’d rather NOT have see it.
When all password characters have been entered, examine closely what you typed in for correctness.
Warning: Be sure the password is correct before pressing the “Next” button above. Our experience with the 1.00.16 version of this firmware, using our iPad Air to configure this, is that if the password is wrong, you’ll be disconnected from the Belkin.setup Wi-Fi network. When you try connecting again, you’ll be repeatedly disconnected, and will be unable to finish the setup, forcing you to start over by pressing the hard RESET button on the back.
9. Then Press the Next Button to Continue with Belkin F9K1122v1 Extender Setup
This displays the “Checking the password” screen, while the range extender attempts to connect to the primary 5 Ghz. network that you’ve selected previously. A spinning progressing circle displays while these behind-the-scenes operations occur, again, as shown next.
Then, once the password is verified for the 2.4 Ghz. extended network, you’re taken back to the screen where you can choose to extend a 5 Ghz. network if you so desire. If you do desire this, repeat steps six through eight above for that network.
Note that the I do not want or need to extend a 5ghz network selection is already highlighted in blue. If yours is not, and you do not want to extend any 5 Ghz. networks, then tap this bar. It should then turn blue.
10. Press the Next Button
The extender then displays a screen that shows the information about the 2.4 Ghz. network that it will extend when setup is complete, similar to that shown in the next screenshot. It shows the SSID of the original Wi-Fi network and the password used to access it.
11. Verify Accuracy of your Extended Networks Info
Note that we’ve covered our entered passwords with “pink paint,” to keep them secure. Check the presented net data one final time, jus to make sure all is right.
You may choose to edit this data (change the SSIDs of the network extensions for example) by pressing the “Edit” button and then, following the instructions.
Or, you can choose to completely scrap all the information entered in this entire procedure, by tapping the “Start Over” button, and then jumping back to step 2 to re enter everything.
However, if the 2.4 Ghz. and 5 Ghz. network information displayed in the “Extended Network information” screen looks okay, then tap the “Create Extended Networks” button. This brings the new Wi-Fi networks “on the air,” and takes you to the final screen in this Wi-Fi range extender setup.
12. Verify that you See the “Your extender is now configured…” Screen
If all went well, then after a short pause, the Extended Networks Configuration Done screen appears, as shown next. This page shows you the SSIDs, security types, and passwords of the extended networks you just set up.
You may print this information by pressing the Print Extended Network Information button.
Do this quickly though, as this screen times out after approximately fifteen seconds, and disappears along with the Belkin.setup temporary network, which again, is supplied by the F9K1122v1 only during setup.
13. Done with Belkin F9K1122v1 Extender Setup !
