In this post gives the Connect Honeywell Thermostat to Google Home procedures. Now we have a Honeywell Total Connect Comfort (TCC) thermostat in the kitchen for a couple years now, and have enjoyed controlling it through the Google assistant with our voice. So here’s what we had to do to set up the connection between Google Home and the thermostat. Not too hard, although there are a few steps involved. No fear though, because we list all of those steps below.
Connect Honeywell Thermostat to Google Home: Before You Start
Create a Honeywell Total Connect Comfort Account
To get started, you’ll need a TCC account. So, if you don’t already have one, head on over to the Honeywell portal website here, and create one. Be sure to save your user Id and password, as you’ll need this information when configuring the Honeywell TCC in the Google Home app below.
Since we’ve owned the Honeywell RTH9580WF WiFi thermostat, pictured next, for a few years now, we’ve already set up an account at the TCC website. Thus, we won’t go into how to do that here. Why? Because creating an account there is easy to do by following the instructions given there.
Get the Google Home App
The Google Home app is available in the App Store or Google Play for the respective iOS and Android mobile device platforms. You probably already have this if you’ve previously set up a Google Home speaker like the Home, Mini, or Max.
Set Up at Least One Google Home in your Home
We also assume that you’ve installed and set up your Google Home smart speaker with the Google Home App on your tablet computer. We’re using the first Google Home, as pictured next.
Link your Honeywell Thermostat to your Total Connect Comfort Account
We have the Honeywell RTH9580WF WiFi thermostat (pictured next) set up on our TCC account. It has been installed, powered up, linked to our home WiFi network, and added to our Honeywell TCC account. Please see our Register Honeywell WiFi Thermostat RTH9580WF Online post for detailed instructions on getting Honeywell smart thermostats plugged into the internet.
Connect Honeywell Thermostat to Google Home: Step by Step
1. Run the Google Home app on your Mobile Device
We’re using an iPad Air computer tablet in this demo. So we find this app on page four of our iPad’s Home screen, although yours may appear in a different spot, depending on how many apps you have installed as well as how you might have arranged them.
Upon running this app, the Google app Home screen appears, as follows. It shows a list of your Home devices currently set up on your Google account.
2. Tap the Main Menu Button
Find this control at at the bottom of the Home screen, near the right side corner, pointed at by the purple arrow, as shown on the screen face above.
Touching the Main Menu option brings up the Main Menu page, as shown next. This page is where you can add home group members, set up multi room groups, and, access device settings.
3. Touch the Settings Menu Item
Find Settings near the left edge of the screen, near the center, a little above center, on the Main Menu page. We pointed at it with the purple arrow, as shown in the last screenshot.
You then should get the Settings screen, as we did, as pictured next. This page presents a list of your speakers and other linked devices. It also gives you the option to add a device. However, you currently can’t get to the option we’re after unless you scroll down the page a bit.
So, swipe up to scroll down this page until you see the Add item, as shown next.
4. Touch the Add Device, Speaker, Group, Service Item
Touching the Add Device, Speaker, Group, Service option brings up the Add page, as shown next. Here’s where you can create a speaker group, add a new person as a member to your ‘home’, and where you set up devices.
5. Tap the Set Up Device Item to Continue with Connect Honeywell Thermostat to Google Home
Locate the Set Up Device option near the left edge of the screen. It’s currently the first menu item, near the top.
Touching Set Up Device brings up the Set Up page, as depicted in the next screenshot. Here, you pick what sort of device to set up. Now you can choose to set up a native Google Home device (speaker, Chromecast, Etc.). Or set up a device that works with Google, like a Honeywell Total Connect Comfort thermostat.
6. Touch the Have Something Already Set Up? Item
This brings up the Add Devices list page, as shown next. This screen lists all the device brands that Google Home currently can access and control.
7. Find the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort Entries
Swipe up to scroll down the Add Devices list, until you see the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort items, as pictured next. Note that there are two versions of this ability; one for users in the USA, and the other for international users.
8. Tap the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort US Ability
In this demo, since, we live in the United States, we tap the red Honeywell Total Connect Comfort US item, as shown in the previous picture, pointed at by the purple arrow.
The app then displays the Total Connect Comfort log In screen as shown in the next picture, prompting you for your TCC account login Id and password.
9. Enter Your Honeywell Total Connect Comfort Account Information
Enter the email address and password you created your Honeywell TCC account with, in the spaces provided. We filled in our Honeywell account data as shown next.
10. Tap the Gray Sign In Button to Continue with Connect Honeywell Thermostat to Google Home
If you’ve entered the user Id and password for a valid Honeywell TCC account, the TCC End User License Agreement page then appears, as shown next.
11. Tap the I Accept Button
You should then see the Select the Following Thermostat page display , as shown next.
12. Touch the OK Button
Tapping OK on the Select the Following Thermostat page bring up the Choose Device page, as shown next, with a single entry in it, the thermostat we just added.
13. Select your Thermostat
Then, tap the thermostat shown that you want to set up by tapping it.
The little circle then fills in with a blue check mark, as shown next.
14. Touch the Next Link
Tapping Next takes you to the Choose a Home page, as depicted in the next photo. The Google Home app groups devices into virtual collections called homes. These allow you to access various devices in each home grouping, which simplifies finding them when you have multiple home device groups. This means that you can control smart devices at multiple locations, so long as you created a separate home for each place that has smart devices you wish to access.
Now we created only one home in our account currently. Further, we do not need another. So we won’t run through how to do that here. Our only home thus, is checked by default (blue circle with a check mark inside it). If you however, had two or more homes set up, at this point you’d have to choose which home group you wished to put the thermostat in.
In this demo though, the home group we wish to add the thermostat to, is already checked. So we can just move on to the next step below.
15. Tap the Next Link
Activating the Next Link takes you to the Where is this Device? Page, as pictured next.
Here is where you get to say in which room or area of your home you’ve installed the thermostat. They give several pre-defined choices on this screen. Plus you can create your own room name if you scroll down this page. There, they give you the option to create a custom room name.
16. Assign your Thermostat a Room
For us though, since our Honeywell thermostat is in the kitchen, we just tapped Kitchen, as shown next.
17. Touch the Next Link
Tapping Next takes us back to the Home screen. Note that now, your thermostat should show up in your the device list given there, just as ours did, as shown next. Remember that the first time we saw the Home page above, prior to setting up the Honeywell thermostat, no thermostat appeared. But now, since adding it was successful, it does appear.
18. Test that Google Home can Access your Honeywell Thermostat
You can see if the Google Home app can now read your thermostat temperature by tapping its entry icon on the Home page.
