How to Check Sony SRS XB01 Battery Life

Covers how to check battery life and level on the tiny Sony Extra Bass SRS XB01 Bluetooth speaker, and also, how to know if the battery’s lasting power is lessening over time.

How to Check Sony SRS XB01 Battery Life, Current Charge

1. First, Turn ON the XB01

You won’t be able to read battery charge status unless the speaker is ON.

To turn on the unit, press and release the Power button, pointed at by the yellow arrow in the last picture.

The small lamp on the front top left corner of the grill should then light up, as shown next. Plus, the speaker may make a two-beep sound if it pairs to a nearby device.  If it does not boot up, then the battery could be completely run down.

But as long as there’s some energy in the battery, the speaker should power up.  So when it does, go ahead with the next step.

2. Look at the CHARGE Lamp on the XB01

Note that this speaker has no battery meter to read out exactly how much charge still remains.  But you can at least tell if the battery is on the verge of going dead by way of the CHARGE lamp. E.g. When the battery is not critically low, this lamp is dark. But when the speaker has very little charge left, this lamp flashes orange. The next picture shows the lamp location.  It’s on the front, near the top right corner of the speaker grill.

How to Check Sony SRS XB01 Battery Life, Overall Battery Condition

When the speaker is new, and using a full power USB charger, the battery charge time is about four and a half (4.5) hours to reach a complete recharge.

And, the fully charged battery should last for around six (6) hours of play time before going dead, when played at moderate volume levels. It lasts around three (3) hours if you play this unit at maximum volume.

A sign of a failing battery, is that it runs dead too fast, or takes too little or too much time to charge all the way. So if you repeatedly charge your speaker to full, but it only plays for under three hours before shutting off, then its battery is likely bad. I.e. It cannot hold a full charge anymore.

If the SRS XB01 battery takes longer than three hours to completely recharge, this could also mean a failing battery.  It might mean also, that the charger you’re using is not strong enough to recharge the speaker in the specified charge time of 2 hours, or that something is wrong with the speaker itself.

Also, slow charging can happen because your charge cord is too thin.  So for best results, we encourage you to use at least a medium-current USB cable (one that easily carries 1.0 amps).
