How to Connect Echo Dot to Sony Bluetooth Speaker

This post shows how to connect a typical Sony Bluetooth speaker to any of the Echo Dot smart speakers. We will show this using the Echo Dot 3rd Generation model.  But the same you could also do with any Echo device that supports Bluetooth.  Since this BT connecting happens between the speaker and Echo Dot directly, you need not turn Bluetooth on in the mobile device you’re using to set up this link.

How to Connect Echo Dot to Sony Bluetooth Speaker

Start with your Sony Bluetooth speaker powered off.  Then run through this routine to connect the speaker to the Echo Dot device. We’re using an iPad Air computer to build this linkage.

1. Find the Alexa App on your Mobile Device

We found the app on an iPadOS iPad Air as shown in the next screenshot. In our case, the Alexa app is on the third home screen page. It’s pointed at by the blue arrow.

3. Tap the More (Hamburger) Control

Find the hamburger item in the lower right corner of the screen. This is pointed at by the green arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Alexa app’s main menu, as shown in the next screenshot.

The Settings option is pointed at by the green arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Settings screen, as shown in the next screenshot.

From here, choose which Alexa device you wish to connect to your Sony Bluetooth speaker.  The green arrow in the next picture points at our choice,  the Thomas’s Echo Input device.

6. Tap the Bluetooth Devices Item

Find the Bluetooth Devices menu item pointed at by the green arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Bluetooth Devices screen, as shown next.

At this point, you’re ready to start a Bluetooth scan by the Echo Dot you just chose for this connection. In our demo here, our Thomas’s Echo Dot will be the one that scans for Bluetooth devices.

But don’t press the Pair a New Device button just yet. We must first power up the Sony Bluetooth speaker and put it into discovery mode.

7. Turn On your Speaker to Continue with How to Connect Echo Dot to Sony Bluetooth Speaker

Put down your mobile device for a moment, and turn on your Sony BT speaker.  In this demo, we power up our Sony SRS XB10 by quickly pressing its Power button. See this button pointed at by the green arrow, in the next picture.  Most Sony speakers have a Power button like this example, that works the same way.

The speaker then powers up.

But since our Echo Dot does not know about this speaker yet, she will not connect with the speaker automatically. Thus, the Power / Bluetooth Status light shows as slow or fast blinking white after you power up this speaker.

8. Put your Sony Bluetooth Speaker into Pairing Mode

Now, to allow the Echo Dot to find your speaker, place that speaker in Bluetooth discovery mode.  In our demo, we press and hold in the Power button, as pointed at by the green arrow in the last picture, until the unit makes a two-tone beep sound. This lets us know that it’s ready to pair. Its Power lamp also flashes to signal that pairing mode is active, although your particular Sony speaker may have a separate pairing button and lamp for Bluetooth status.

9. Now, Go Back to your Mobile Device

The screen with the blue Pair a New Device button should still be showing, as in the next screenshot.

10. Tap the Blue Pair a New Device Button to Continue with How to Connect Echo Dot to Sony Bluetooth Speaker

This starts your Echo Dot scanning for any nearby Bluetooth devices that are themselves in discovery mode. Since our Sony Bluetooth speaker is now in pairing mode, the Dot should find it.

After a short pause, you should see something like the screen we got. Shown next.

In our demo, the Alexa app found our BT speaker, named  SRS XB10.

11. Find your Sony Bluetooth Speaker on the Discovered Devices List

We see our speaker in the list, as pointed at by the green arrow in that picture.

12. Finally, Connect your Echo Dot with your Sony Bluetooth Speaker

Connect to the BT speaker by tapping the listed speaker in the Bluetooth Setup screen, shown in the last screenshot above.

The Echo Dot then connects with the speaker, as seen in the next screenshot.
