How to tell if JBL Charge 5 is charging? Well, this power bank speaker has a strip row of LEDs on the lower front, as shown in the pictures following. These lights display battery charge level. Thus, to tell if this speaker is charging, look at these to see Charge 5 charging in action and how to know that the speaker is indeed taking on energy. Moreover, you can feel the back of the speaker where the cord plugs in to see if you can detect some slight warmth. Plus, that same warmth you should also notice on the charger itself. If you feel a little heat on both the speaker and the charger, then the battery is likely charging. But if there’s no heat on the power adapter and the speaker, then regardless of what the light strip might say, the speaker is likely not charging.

How to Tell if JBL Charge 5 is Charging
Connect the Speaker to AC Power
Obviously, you can be sure that this speaker is NOT charging when no cord is plugged into it.
Check the Battery Meter Gauge
As mentioned, we have an LED strip in the lower center of the front of the speaker, just beneath the JBL logo. Further, as the battery charging moves forward, more of this strip lights up.
So one way to tell if the JBL Charge 5 is charging, is if you see part of this strip flashing white. When the battery inside is dead all the way, the very bottom of the strip blinks white while charging, or red when not charging and the speaker is ON.
Then as the battery fills, the lower part of the strip switches to a steady white glow. At that time, the blinking light moves further up the strip toward the top.

Also, the speaker heats up a bit during charging as does its charger. This warmth is an excellent way how to tell if the JBL Charge 5 is charging.
When the Whole Bar Lights Solid, Charging is Close to Finished
As speaker charging advances, more and more of the battery meter bar lights up solid, and the flashing moves further up that bar, until it reaches the top most part. As long as some part of the bar blinks, then you can be pretty sure that the JBL Charge 4 is in fact, charging.
Note that all the lamps in the battery status bar glow as the speaker nears the end of the charging cycle. But the topmost one goes on flashing for several minutes.
The recharge cycle finishes when all charge status gauge lamps go dark. Thus, the battery is no longer (not) charging when all lamps are OFF. Even with the charger cord still plugged in, no lamp glows when battery is full, and the speaker no longer charges when the battery reaches this state.
