How to Tell if JBL Xtreme 2 is Charging

How to tell if JBL Xtreme 2 power bank is charging?  Well, this Bluetooth speaker, with its BIG battery, has a group of five lights on its lower front, as we present in the pictures following.  These LEDs tell of battery level status.  So perhaps the best way to tell, is to look at these lamps, as they show Xtreme 2 charging progress (if any). We explain below how to interpret them.

How to Tell if JBL Xtreme 2 is Charging

Speaker is NOT Charging if Not Plugged In !

Of course, you can be sure that this speaker is NOT charging with no cord  connected to it.

How the Meter Tells Us that the Speaker is Charging

As detailed above, the light strip indicates battery charge level.  So, as recharging moves forward, you can tell if the JBL Xtreme is charging if you see at least the lowest part of the meter bar flashing white.  E.g. When the battery inside is “undeniably dead,” the light at the far bottom of the strip blinks white while charging.  Then as the battery fills, that lamp changes to a steady white glow.  At that time, the next lamp to the right starts blinking white.

As speaker charging moves on, more and more of the light bar glows solid, and the flashing moves further up the bar.  It keeps moving upward until it reaches the top of the meter bar.  This progressive light-up of the bar is another indication that the Xtreme 2 is indeed charging.

This picture above shows the speaker just before wrapping up a charging cycle. Note that all the lamps in the battery status meter glow.  But the last one goes on blinking for several minutes.  When one LED flashes while a working charger is connected, this is another way that the speaker tells us that it is charging.

How the Light Gauge Tells Us that the JBL Xtreme 2 is NOT Charging

Note that this BT speaker is NOT charging, when you see a blinking red light at the far left of the gauge.  This means that the battery NEEDS charging. Thus, a flashing red light lets us know that the speaker is not currently getting any (or insufficient) charging current from the external power supply.

Also, the battery charge cycle is done when all battery gauge LEDs go dark, as shown next. Thus, the battery is no longer recharging when all lamps go OFF. Even with the charger cord still plugged in, no lamp glows when battery is full.  Thus, the Xtreme 2 is NOT charging when the battery is full.

Other ways to Tell if the JBL Xtreme 2 is Charging

1. The Speaker and Charger May Heat Slightly

Also, the speaker warms a bit during charging as does its charger adapter.  This warmth is a quick way how to tell if the JBL Xtreme 2 is charging.

2. The Charger May Hum or Whine

Especially during the first hour of the recharge cycle, when the speaker requires the most charging current, the supply adapter, in addition to heating a bit, will sometimes make humming, whining, or scratchy squealing noises. Note that these usually disappear when you disconnect the charger from the speaker.

3. The Speaker Plays a Little Louder While Charging

As with many JBL speakers, you get a bit more audio output power from them when they’re running on AC power.  Since the Xtreme 2 always charges, if the battery inside needs charging, when you apply external power, a louder speaker likely means that charging is occurring.
