JBL Flip 6 Battery Life

The battery life on the JBL Flip 6  we discuss in terms of the following. Either how long the speaker plays after a full charge.  Or, how long the battery lasts before battery replacement becomes necessary.

JBL Flip 6 Battery Life Per Charge

How long should the speaker play per recharge?  The built in lithium ion battery lasts up to twelve hours per full charge.  Note that this time varies depending on the volume and type of audio you play.

How Many Full Charges Should the Battery Take ?

The battery should provide 500 to 1,000 charge-discharge cycles before the play time per charge shortens much.

Signs of a Failing Battery on the JBL Flip 6

The Speaker Takes Too Long to Charge

Using the USB-C cable that comes with the speaker, the battery should fully charge in under three hours. But it make take longer if your charger provides less than fifteen watts (5 volts at 3 amps).  But let’s assume that your cable and charger are the right specs. Yet the battery takes longer than three hours to fully charge. In that case, it may indeed be going bad.

The JBL Flip 6 Doesn’t Play as Long as it Should

The speaker may not play as long as it did before running dead.  This is another indication of a battery reaching the end of its  life.

The JBL Flip 6 Distorts or Shuts Off at Higher Volumes

When you raise the volume, especially on music that has lots of bass, you may hear crackling or other distortion.  Or, the speaker may cut out or power down when a deep bass drum thump occurs in the music.  This could mean that the battery can no longer sink enough current for the drivers to play these sounds.  Again, this may be a sign to replace the battery.

The Battery Gauge Gives Wrong Readings

The battery meter on this speaker may show that the battery has full, or nearly full charge.  But yet, it goes dead within minutes of reading the indicator.  This is a common symptom when lithium ion battery life is fading.

How to Get the Most Battery Life on the JBL Flip 6

Exercise the battery !  That is, charge it all the way, and discharge it all the way.  The power management system appears robust. Indeed it well protects the battery from over charging or completely draining. Why?  Because both of these extremes are very hard on these batteries.

However we suggest not leaving the speaker on the charge once the battery gauge reads full.  Also, when the battery does run out of power, do not leave it in this deadened state for very long.  We suggest that you recharge your speaker as soon as possible, as these batteries hate being dead.  A dead battery for too long often results in a spoiled battery.

Conclusion

Replacing the battery in the JBL Flip 6 usually fixes the above mentioned issues.  However, only replace with a battery of similar type — preferably the same make and part number as the original.

Finally, you can often avoid ever having to replace the battery due to shortened battery life. How? By charging the battery and exercising it as well. So, if you store the speaker for long periods without using it, top off its charge every six months. This provides the most deep charge-discharge cycles in our experience.
