Reset Echo Dot 3rd Gen Alexa Speaker, How To

Here, we demo how to reset Echo Dot 3rd Gen speaker.  So why would you ever do this?  Well, you may decide to sell or give your Dot 3 to another person.  Or link it to a different Amazon account.  Or connect it to a different WiFi network.  In all these cases, resetting is the best way to clean out all old account data from the Dot.  Resetting gets it ready to use on a new account and / or Wi-Fi network.

To unlink the Echo Dot 3rd Generation from its current Amazon Alexa account, perform the routine below.

Note that if you’re just trying to fix erratic behavior of the Echo Dot Gen 3, you may not need a complete factory default reset. So, before resetting, try powering off the Dot 3 for fifteen seconds.  Do this by disconnecting its power cable either from the wall outlet, or from the speaker itself.  Then, wait for a quarter minute, and then plug it back in. Rebooting often restores proper operation. But if not, read on for the proper hard reset procedure.

Once reset, you’ll no longer be able to control the Echo Dot 3 from the account where you controlled it from before.  To regain control via the previous account, run through the setup procedure again.  There, relink the Dot 3 to that account again via the Alexa app.

How to Reset Echo Dot 3rd Gen

1. Connect Wall Power Cable

First, plug in the Dot 3rd Gen speaker to its 12-volt power adapter AC cord, as shown next.

2. Next, Plug the AC Adapter into a Working Wall Outlet

Then, wait for the Echo Dot to complete powering up.  It’s finished when either the light ring goes completely dark, or flashes orange, red, or purple.

3. Next, Press and Hold the Action Button for 5 to 10 Seconds

Depress the Action button until the light ring turns orange, and the 3rd Gen Dot announces that it is entering setup mode.  On this Dot, the Action button also functions as the Reset button, and is pointed at by the green arrow in the next picture.

4. Finally, What Happens After Echo Dot 3rd Gen Reset?

Your Echo Dot 3rd Gen smart speaker is now restored to its factory default settings and has entered setup mode, as shown next.

Pack  Up 3rd Gen Echo Dot or Set it Up Again

You may now give your 3rd Gen Echo Dot to another without fear that they’ll have access to the Alexa settings on your Amazon account. Or, you can set it up again on your existing account. But if transferring to another person, we suggest that you pack the Dot in its original carton if you have it, for safest transport through the mail, as shown in the next picture.

Echo Dot 3 Buttons Guide, Layout, Purpose, How to Use

The Amazon Echo Dot 3rd generation speaker features several buttons and a light ring around its top as have its earlier versions.  Here though, we explore the Echo Dot 3 buttons and input and output ports.  We show  where each one is on the speaker. We then discuss what each button / plug is for, and when to press them to access the many features of this popular Amazon speaker.  Finally, we touch a bit on some of the light ring patterns you’ll see when pressing these buttons.

Echo Dot 3 Buttons Functions, Descriptions, and Locations

Volume Down and Up Buttons

The Alexa Echo Dot 3 speaker has two push-button volume controls on the top. These round depressions, with raised minus and plus symbols inside, decrease and increase the speaker volume.  See the volume buttons, pointed at by the green arrows in the next picture.

Picture of the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3 speaker with its Volume Up and Down buttons highlighted. Echo Dot 3 buttons.

Press the minus button to lower speaker volume. Press the plus button to raise the volume.  Note that adjusting volume on one speaker in this way does not affect the loudness of any other Echo speaker on the network or in the same group.  Each Echo device remembers its own volume setting.

The light ring briefly lights up when you press either UP or DOWN button.  It glows  white and shows where the volume is currently set.  The less of the ring that glows, the lower the volume setting.  The more of it that glows, the louder.  See the following picture show how the light ring lights depending on volume setting.

The ring extinguishes a couple seconds after the last volume button press.

Each press of either volume key illuminates the light ring in white.

Mic Mute / Mic OFF Button

The Alexa Echo Dot 3 speaker also features a microphone off / on button. This circular button, with a raised STOP symbol inside, mutes and unmutes the built in far field mics.  When muted, the speaker does not hear anything, and so, does not respond to the wake word, or any other voice command for that matter.

See the Mic Mute button, pointed at by the green arrow in the next picture.

The light ring and mute button also glow red to show that the unit will not hear you, as pictured next.

When muted, press this button to un mute / turn on the mics again.  Once unmuted, the red light ring goes dark as shown next, and the speaker once again responds to voice commands.

Action and Reset Button

The round Action button has a raised, white dot in its recessed center. We find this button at three o’clock on the Echo Dot 3 speaker top panel, as pointed at by the green arrow we drew in, in the next picture.

Picture of the Amazon Echo Dot 3 speaker, top view, showing the Action button highlighted. Echo Dot 3 buttons.

Amazon Echo Dot 3 speaker, top view, showing the Action button highlighted. Echo Dot 3 buttons.

Quickly press and release the Action button to get Alexa’s attention instead of calling out her name with your voice.  Raise her in this way when being quiet is required or in loud places where she might have trouble hearing you utter her wake word.

You can also reset the Echo Dot 3 to factory default settings and state by pressing and gently holding in the Action button until the hard reset happens.  Reset usually begins in five to seven seconds.

Finally, there is a light sensor beneath the white dot on this triple duty button.  This “electric eye” senses the ambient light shining on the speaker, and adjusts the brightness of its light ring accordingly.  The brighter the surrounding light, the brighter the ring glows whenever it lights up.  The darker the area, the dimmer the light ring glow.

Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3 Speaker Connection Ports

The Echo Dot 3 also sports a two-hole panel, located on the back side. Herein, are the only two connection ports; the AUX Out and DC power input ports, as pictured next.

Picture of the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3 wireless speaker, rear view, showing the Power and Audio Out ports panel. Echo Dot 3 buttons.

Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3 wireless speaker, rear view, showing the Power and Audio Out ports panel. Echo Dot 3 buttons.

The hole on the left is the DC power input plug.  The hole on the right is a 3.5mm line level audio output plug.  This supports connecting your 3rd generation Dot to your home theater system for louder music.

Well, that wraps up this summary of all the buttons on the 3rd generation Echo Dot Alexa speaker. With these, you can access all of the speaker’s commands.  Also, the light ring lets you see speaker status as well. Enjoy!

Echo Dot 3 Setup Instructions for Amazon Alexa 3rd Generation Dot

This piece discusses what you’ll need for Echo Dot 3 setup and the steps to take to perform that setup.  Applies to the 2018 model of Amazon’s ever popular version of this Echo Dot smart speaker.

Picture of the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3 top view, showing all its buttons.

Echo Dot 3 Setup Instructions: Our Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3 speaker top view, showing all its buttons.

Before you Start Echo Dot 3 Setup

1. A WiFi Internet Connection

None of the Echo Dot 3 devices manufactured to date has an Ethernet RJ45 port.  So, you may only link them to Amazon’s Alexa service via your WiFi network.  That network must have internet access. Also note that Alexa on your 3rd generation Echo Dot will not function without a properly set up wireless internet connection.

2. An Amazon Account

If you do not already have an Amazon account, one way to get one is to visit https://amazon.com/ .  Follow the prompts there to set one up.

Or, when you run the Alexa app in Step 2 under Echo Dot 3 Setup Step-by-Step Instructions below, and you’ve never signed into the app with a valid account, Alexa will ask you to sign in, as shown next.

Screenshot of the Amazon Alexa app on iOS, displaying its Login prompt.

There, Amazon allows you to create a new account if necessary.  If so, press the  Create a New Amazon Account  button in the lower center portion of the login screen.  Then, Alexa walks you through that account setup procedure.  At any rate, be sure to successfully set up an Amazon account before proceeding.

3. A Compatible Mobile Device

You’ll need to run the Alexa app on a compatible mobile phone or tablet computer.  For this scenario, we’re using our iPad Air tablet.

4. The Alexa App

The Alexa app is available in the Google Play (Android) store, as well as the App Store (iOS).  Download and install the appropriate version on your tablet, and log into it with your Amazon account credentials.

5. Bluetooth

Be sure to enable Bluetooth on your mobile device.  The Alexa app uses Bluetooth to detect nearby Echo Dot speakers in some situations.  So, turn on Bluetooth on this device on when setting up an Echo Dot 3.

Echo Dot 3 Setup Instructions, Step-by-Step

1. Unpack your Speaker

Skip ahead to the next step if you already unboxed your Echo Dot 3.

Picture of the Echo Dot 3rd Gen speaker box, front view.

Now the Dot 3 comes in a small blue box, as pictured in the last shot earlier. For new Dots, the box itself arrives in a clear plastic bag.  Remove that outer bag, and slit the tape securing the box top closed with a sharp knife.

Open the box lid, take out all contents and spread them on a floor or table.  You should have the Dot Echo 3, the power adapter with its permanently attached cord, and some documentation.

Remove any clear plastic protectors on the Dot 3 from the side and top.  This exposes the DC power input and audio output (headphone) cable ports (side).  It also allows access to the volume up-down, mic mute, and wake buttons (top).

Then, unpack the adapter and cable, which may also be packed in separate plastic bags.

Tap the Alexa app icon to run it. If this is your first time running the app, it will prompt you for your Amazon account and password.

Furthermore, if this is your first Echo Dot device, the app will prompt you to set up a new device.

4. Enter Amazon Account Id and password.

Should the Alexa app prompt, enter your Amazon account credentials.  Then  you’ll be signed in via the Alexa app.  The app then remembers your Amazon account information whenever you run it, so that you won’t have to enter this data every time.

5. If you are not prompted to set up a new device…

If this Dot is not your first Echo device, the app displays its Home screen.  In this scenario, we’re using the iOS version of the Alexa app.

13. Get your 3rd Generation Echo Dot into Setup Mode

If your Dot 3 is powered up, as it should be if you did Step 2 above, it’s probably displaying its orange light ring.  If so, then skip ahead to Step 14. Or if not, then work through this step.

Picture of the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3rd Generation speaker, shown in Setup mode, light ring orange and spinning.

Amazon Alexa Echo Dot 3rd Generation speaker, shown in Setup mode, light ring orange and spinning. Echo Dot 3 Setup.

If this is a brand new Dot 3 that you just took out of the box, just plug it into AC power.  Then after a a quarter minute it automatically enters Setup mode and announces this.

On the other hand, if this is not a brand new 3rd Gen Dot, it may not immediately go into Setup mode.  In that case, you need to reset it.  See our   Factory Reset Echo Dot 3rd Generation Instructions, How To   post, that details how to reset the Dot 3. In short, to reset, press and hold the Action button until the unit starts resetting.  After a hard reset, the Dot 3 automatically enters Setup mode.

At any rate, however you get there, once you have the speaker in Setup mode, proceed onto the next step.

14. Tap the Echo Dot 3rd Generation Speaker that Matches the One you’re Setting Up

Next. pick up your mobile device again and go back to the Alexa app.  You should see the screen pictured in Step 12 above.

Since we’re setting up an Echo Dot Generation 3 speaker in this demo, we touch the topmost speaker in the displayed list of Echo Dot models shown there.

This starts the Alexa app scanning for new Echo Dot 3 devices to set up, as shown next.

Screenshot of the Alexa App on iOS, showing its -Select Amazon Echo- page while it searches for Echo devices to set up.

Alexa App on iOS, showing its -Select Amazon Echo- page while it searches for Echo devices to set up. Echo Dot 3 Setup.

Now at this point, the Alexa app is waiting to hear from the speaker you’re setting up.  It will hear it when you place your Dot Echo 3 into Setup mode, it is when captured in the next picture.

If your speaker is indeed in Setup mode, then after a brief pause, Alexa should find your new speaker, as ours did, shown next.

Screenshot of the Alexa app on iOS displaying its -Select your Amazon Echo- screen, with a Dot 3 that it found highlighted.

Alexa app on iOS displaying its -Select your Amazon Echo- screen, with a Dot 3 that it found highlighted. Echo Dot 3 Setup.

If Alexa does not find your speaker, make sure you have Bluetooth turned on on your mobile device that’s running the Alexa app.  Check again that your speaker flashing its light ring in orange.  Note that the Dot 3 only stays in Setup mode for several minutes, and times out after that.  If timeout occurs, then unplug the Dot from power for a few seconds and plug it back in.  This should re establish Setup mode.

15. Tap the Listed Echo Dot 3 to Set Up

This brings up the  Select your Wi-Fi Network   page, as shown next.

Just prior to Alexa showing this screen, it runs a WiFi scan from your selected Echo Dot 3 speaker, for in-range WiFi networks that the speaker sees.  Then, it’s this list that the app displays for you.

Screenshot of the Alexa app on iOS showing its -Select Your WiFi Network- screen, with the network we want highlighted.

16. Choose the WiFi Network To Connect your Echo Dot 3 With

Tap the Wi-Fi network you want your new 3rd Generation Dot to log into.  In our case, we’re choosing the 937T681J4059H_2G_Guests network.  That one is pointed out by the green arrow in the last picture.

17. Enter the Password for Chosen WiFi Network

Tapping a WiFi network may prompt you to enter the password for that network.  Skip to Step 18 if you don’t see this prompt.

The Alexa app may not prompt you if you’ve previously saved this network’s information to your Amazon account.  This is true for us in this scenario.  So Alexa did not ask us for the password.

But if a password entry screen appears, type in the correct password, and then move ahead to the next step.

18. Wait for your Echo Dot 3 to Connect to Chosen WiFi Network

While your 3rd Gen Echo Dot attempts to connect to the WiFi network you picked in Step 15 above, the Alexa app shows the Connecting your Echo Dot to Wi-Fi screen, as pictured next.

Screenshot of the Alexa app on iOS displaying its -Connecting your Echo Dot to WiFi- page.

Alexa app on iOS displaying its -Connecting your Echo Dot to WiFi- page. Echo Dot 3 Setup.

After some seconds, and if all goes well, you see the following screen.  This shows that the speaker successfully connected to your proposed WiFi network.

Screenshot of the Alexa app on iOS, displaying its -WiFi Connect Success- page, with the -Continue- button highlighted.

Alexa app on iOS, displaying its -WiFi Connect Success- page, with the -Continue- button highlighted. Echo Dot 3 Setup.

Also, the Echo Dot 3 then makes a rising chime sound, and announces that it’s ready for use.

But if your speaker does not connect and you get errors, follow any directions the app displays give.  If you entered the wrong WiFi password, the system prompts you to re-enter it.  But if the problem connecting is network related, you may have to investigate and resolve that on your router.  In that case, once you’ve fixed that issue, try rerunning this setup procedure again.  We suggest that you close the Alexa app and start it anew first.  Then, again, be sure that your Echo Dot 3 is in Setup mode before doing the setup routine again.

19. Tap the Blue Continue Bar

Hitting the Continue strip then invites you to choose which speaker your Echo Dot 3 will play through, as shown next.

20. Choose Default Speaker

In our demo, we chose the speaker that’s built into the 3rd generation Echo Dot.

Then, tapping this choice then takes you to the  Where is your Echo Dot  screen, as pictured next.  This screen allows you to name the location in your home where you will place your Dot 3.

21. Tap your Desired Location for the Echo Dot 3

Pick the name of your desired Echo Dot 3 location from the list displayed, as shown in the last picture.  In this demo, we tapped Bedroom, as shown in the last photo. Note the check mark that appears when you make a choice, as pointed at by the green arrow in the next shot.

22. Tap the Blue Continue Bar

Once you bump the Continue strip, your Echo Dot 3 has been completely set up and is now ready to accept voice commands.  Then, the Alexa app takes you back to its Home screen, as shown next.

Picture of the Alexa App on iOS, displaying its -Home- page.

Alexa App on iOS, displaying its -Home- page. Echo Dot 3 Setup.

You may now close the Alexa app if you wish.

23. Test Out your Echo Dot 3

Once you’ve finished the setup procedure described above, your Alexa 3rd Gen Echo Dot is ready to receive and respond to commands and questions once the orange light ring darkens.  Try asking your Dot 3 some questions like:

  • What’s the weather?
  • What time is it?
  • Give me my flash briefing.
  • How are you today?
  • Sing happy birthday.
  • Tell me a joke.

… and so on. Of course, be sure to precede each question with your Dot wake word.  The default is Alexa.  Or it could be Computer, Amazon, or Echo if you changed it.

24 Done!

Enjoy your Echo Dot 3.  It’s an amazingly great sounding little speaker, with its improved bass and volume, belying its small size!

Factory Reset Echo Dot 3 Instructions, How To

Here, we demo how to factory reset Echo Dot 3, this 3rd generation talking speaker. Factory resetting restores the 3rd Gen smart speaker back to default, fresh-from-the-factory operation.  So why would anyone want to do this?  You might want to sell the Dot 3 on eBay or give it to another for Christmas.  Resetting also allows you to link the third generation Dot to a different Amazon account.  Or set it up on a different wireless network.  In all these situations, factory resetting works best to clear no longer valid account data from the Dot 3.  Factory Resetting gets the speaker ready to use on a new account and / or WiFi network.

To detach the Echo Dot 3rd Generation from its current Amazon account, run the routine below.

Now if you’re just trying to get rid of unusual behavior of the Echo Dot 3, you may not need a complete factory reset. So, before resetting, try powering off the Dot 3 for fifteen seconds.  Turn it off by unplugging its power cord either from the AC outlet, or from the Dot itself.  Then, wait ten to fifteen seconds. Then plug it back in. Rebooting often brings back correct operation. But if not, read on for the factory reset procedure to follow.

Once reset, you’ll no longer have control of the Echo Dot 3 from the account where you controlled it from before.  To control it again through the previous account, run through the setup procedure again.

Factory Reset Echo Dot 3 Instructions, How To

1. Connect the Power Cable

First, connect the Echo Dot 3rd Generation speaker to its 12-volt external power cord, as shown next.

2. Next, Plug the Adapter End into a Working AC Outlet

See this as shown next.

Then, wait for the Echo Dot 3 to complete booting.  That’s done when either the light ring goes dark, or it starts flashing orange, red, or purple.

3. Next, Press and Hold the Action Button for Five Seconds

Hold in the Action button until the light ring turns orange, and the Dot 3 says that it is entering Setup mode.  On this 3rd gen of the Echo Dot line, the Action button also works as the Factory Reset button.  Find it pointed at by the green arrow in the next picture.

4. Finally, What Happens After Factory Reset?

Your Echo Dot 3rd Generation smart speaker has now been returned to its factory state, and has entered setup mode, as shown next.

Pack it Up or Set it Up Again

You may now give your Echo Dot to another without worry that they’ll have access to the account information and settings on your Amazon account. Or, you can set it up again on your existing account. If selling though, we recommend that you pack the speaker in its original box if you still have it.  This maximizes the chances for safest transport through mail or other delivery service, as shown in the next picture.

Echo Dot 3 Adapter Specs, AC Power Adapter Info

Here we cover the Echo Dot 3 Adapter specs for the AC power adapter.  This is the wall plug that comes with the Amazon Echo Dot generation 3 smart speaker.  First,, the US version of this adapter has non folding AC prongs.  It also has a six-foot long affixed cord. Further, it’s light weight for the 15 watt power output. It’s square yet modest width and height. This 12-volt supply fits into a standard power strip or wall outlet.  But it blocks no nearby outlets, as shown next.

Picture of the Amazon Alexa Echo Dot Gen 3 smart speaker powering up, showing its AC adapter plugged into standard wall outlet.

Amazon Alexa Echo Dot Gen 3 smart speaker powering up, showing its AC adapter plugged into standard wall outlet.

Yet the Echo Dot 3 power cable silently outputs that 15 watts of power to this latest, 3rd version of the Echo Dot smart speaker.  Also, this supply provides good regulation, allowing the little speaker to play deeper bass, crisp treble, and decent audio volume.

Further, this is not a low-budget AC power adapter. It appears well built.  Also, it is sealed, runs with little heating even at higher volumes, and gives off little if any RFI and EMI noise. But while not built for repair, the low cost of this switching supply makes fixing these ITE units a relic exercise.

Furthermore, the echo dot 3rd generation power supply DC output connector, the metal barrel part, is approximately 10 mm long, with an outer diameter of approximately 4 mm.

The size of the positive lead hole at the top of the barrel plug is roughly 2 mm.  Note, that this is a bit smaller than the 21 watt and larger versions of this power supply.

Finally, the AC adapters for the 2nd generation Echo (21 watts) and echo dot 3 power adapter (15 watts) look similar.  But they ARE NOT interchangeable.  This is due to center conductor size difference.  Also, there’s the DC output voltage on the 21 watt version being 15 volts.  But on THIS wall adapter, it’s 12 volts. So, even if the connectors from each adapter would fit the other speaker, their voltage specs make them incompatible with that other speaker.

This echo dot 3rd generation power adapter, including its cable and connector, weighs approximately 4 ounces.
