Resetting Echo Dot, All Models Posts

First, this group of posts each cover the reset topic for all models of the Echo Dot Alexa speakers.  They offer general info that applies to every one of them.

Further, note that resetting and Echo Dot takes it offline in the Alexa app, although you can still see it listed there.  Thus, resetting does not delete the speaker from the Alexa app.  So if you’re selling it, be sure to, in addition to resetting the speaker, remove it from your Amazom account via the Alexa app.

Finally, if you have no access to the Alexa app, you can deregister the Echo Dot from your Amazon account via the Amazon website at https://alexa.amazon.com/  .   Explicitly, log in there with your Amazon account ID and password, visit your devices list, find the entry for the Echo Dot you’re selling, and follow the screen instructions to delete it.

Next we cover resetting the Echo Dot Gen 1 speaker.  This is the original model of the Echo Dot speaker.

Factory Reset Alexa Instructions, Dot, Spot, Echo

A complete factory reset Alexa Echo routine is necessary at times.  Why?   Because maybe you’d like to sell your old Alexa device. Or perhaps you just want to connect your speaker assistant to a new Amazon account, or to different WiFi. So, with those tasks in mind, this post details factory resetting the Alexa line of smart speakers.  For that, follow the steps next.  We  cover Echo Gens 1 and 2, the Echo Spot, and the Dot Gens 1, 2, and 3.  We do not however cover the Echo Plus, Show, or Input devices here.

Resetting unlinks the Amazon Alexa from its current Amazon account.  Factory reset also assures that the Alexa speaker forgets its current Wi-Fi settings.

Warning: After the factory reset, your Alexa speaker will not work until set up again.

Also, to save yourself some set up time, before factory resetting, try powering off the Alexa for fifteen seconds, by disconnecting its power cable either from the wall outlet, or from the unit itself.  Wait for a quarter minute, and then connect it again.  Powering off then on, often restores proper operation without the headaches of a full factory reset. However, if power cycling does not fix the speaker, then read on for the proper factory reset procedure that often restores correct operation to the Alexa speakers.

Or, you can set it up once again on your existing account. Once the light ring turns orange, the unit stays in setup mode until someone runs the setup routine. The Echo 2 will not work until properly set up and linked to an Amazon account.

Reset Echo Dot 3rd Generation, How To

Here, we show how to reset Echo Dot 3rd Generation Alexa smart speaker back to factory default settings.  So why would you ever do this?  Well, you may wish to sell or give your Dot 3 to another person.  Or link it to a new Amazon account.  Or connect it to a new WiFi network.  In all these cases, resetting is the best way to clean out all old account data from the Dot.  A reset gets it ready to use on a new account and / or Wi-Fi network.

To reset Echo Dot 3rd generation and unlink it from its current Alexa account, run through the routine below.

Do not always reset as a first step for fixing strange Echo Dot behavior. Before hard resetting, try turning off the Dot 3 for fifteen seconds.  Do this by unplugging its power cable either from the wall outlet, or from the speaker itself.  Then, wait for a quarter minute. Then plug it back in. Rebooting often restores proper working. But if not, read on for the proper hard reset procedure.

Once you reset Echo Dot 3rd generation you’ll no longer be able to control the speaker from your Amazon account.  To get control of it back, run through the setup procedure again.  There, relink the Dot 3 to that account again via the Alexa app.

Factory Reset Echo Dot 3 Instructions, How To

Here, we demo how to factory reset Echo Dot 3, this 3rd generation talking speaker. Factory resetting restores the 3rd Gen smart speaker back to default, fresh-from-the-factory operation.  So why would anyone want to do this?  You might want to sell the Dot 3 on eBay or give it to another for Christmas.  Resetting also allows you to link the third generation Dot to a different Amazon account.  Or set it up on a different wireless network.  In all these situations, factory resetting works best to clear no longer valid account data from the Dot 3.  Factory Resetting gets the speaker ready to use on a new account and / or WiFi network.

To detach the Echo Dot 3rd Generation from its current Amazon account, run the routine below.

Now if you’re just trying to get rid of unusual behavior of the Echo Dot 3, you may not need a complete factory reset. So, before resetting, try powering off the Dot 3 for fifteen seconds.  Turn it off by unplugging its power cord either from the AC outlet, or from the Dot itself.  Then, wait ten to fifteen seconds. Then plug it back in. Rebooting often brings back correct operation. But if not, read on for the factory reset procedure to follow.

Once reset, you’ll no longer have control of the Echo Dot 3 from the account where you controlled it from before.  To control it again through the previous account, run through the setup procedure again.

If selling though, we recommend that you pack the speaker in its original box if you still have it.  This maximizes the chances for safest transport through mail or other delivery service, as shown in the next picture.
