An Echo Dot 4 smart speaker with the JBL Flip 6 Bluetooth speaker.
This post shows how to connect the JBL Flip 6 Bluetooth speaker to Alexa smart speakers. Now this pairing happens between the JBL and Alexa devices directly. So you need not turn Bluetooth on in the mobile device you’re using to set up this connection.
With your JBL Flip 6 OFF, run through this routine to connect it to your Alexa device. We use an iPad Air tablet here to set this up.
Firstly, we find the app on the iPad Air. In this exercise, the app is in a custom folder that we created called Smart Speakers.
The app displays its Home screen.
So find the hamburger item in the lower right corner of the screen.
This brings up the Alexa app’s main menu.
This brings up the Settings screen.
Touching Device Settings brings up the All Devices page.
Then from here, choose which Echo device you wish to pair with your JBL Flip 6 speaker.
This takes you to the device-specific settings screen for the speaker you chose.
In this demo, we pair from our Thomas’s 2nd Echo Dot 4 speaker to our JBL Flip 6. So the Dot’s device specific settings screen looks as follows.
Then find the Connect a Device option.
This brings up the Setup screen.
At this point, your Alexa device scans for nearby Bluetooth devices that are in pairing mode. Here, we selected an Echo Dot 4 earlier. So, this speaker will be the one that scans for BT devices.
Note that our Dot speaker found no devices so far. But it will when we turn on put the JBL Flip 6 into discovery mode.
Bring your Flip 6 close to your Alexa device to pair. Then power up the Flip 6 by pressing and releasing the Power button.
Then put the speaker into pairing mode by pressing and releasing the Pairing button.
When you put the Flip 6 into discovery mode, it should then appear in the Alexa app. Find it on the Pair Bluetooth Device… page.
Note that if your speaker does not show up on this page, then try the following…
We usually find that this gets the speaker to appear here as it should.
See the last screenshot above. The test JBL Flip 6 speaker is there.
Then pair to the Flip 6 by tapping the listed speaker on the Pair Bluetooth Device… screen.
Your Alexa speaker then pairs with the JBL Flip 6.
The app then takes you back to the Thomas’s 2nd Echo Dot 4 screen.
Note that our Bluetooth speaker now shows as connected. Also, the JBL Flip 6 makes the Speaker Paired sound (the three ascending guitar notes).
The JBL Flip 6 now has connection with your Alexa. So its Bluetooth light glows solid white to signal that this pairing is underway.
At last we can now ask Alexa to play music. Then those tunes will come out of the Flip 6. Be sure though, to speak to the Alexa device when making requests.
But do not speak to the Flip 6 directly. Even though it now connects with Alexa, the Alexa is still the speaker that receives voice commands. So talk to that device so it hears you best.
