How to Control Honeywell Thermostat with Google Home

Shows how to control Honeywell thermostat with Google Home. So here’s how we set up the connection between Google Home and the thermostat to enable such controlling.  Not too hard, although there are a few steps to run.  No fear though, because we list all of them below.

How to Control Honeywell Thermostat With Google Home: Before You Start

Create a Honeywell Total Control Comfort Account

So to start, you’ll need a TCC account.  If you don’t already have one, head on over to the Honeywell portal website  here,  and create one.  But be sure to save your user Id and password. Indeed you will need these when configuring the Honeywell TCC in the Google Home app.

Now we own the Honeywell RTH9580WF WiFi thermostat. Had it for a few years now. Thus we already have an account at the TCC website. So we won’t go into how to do that here.  Why?  Because creating an account there is easy to do by following the instructions at that site.

Get the Google Home App

Furthermore, the Google Home app is available in the App Store or Google Play. So you probably already have this if you’ve set up a Google Home before.

Set Up at Least One Google Home in your Home

We also assume that you installed your Google Home speaker. Here, we use the first Google Home speaker for this demo.

Link your Honeywell Thermostat to your Total Connect Comfort Account

We have the Honeywell RTH9580WF WiFi thermostat set up on our TCC account. We installed it, powered it up, linked to our home WiFi network, and added to our Honeywell TCC account.  Please see our   Register Honeywell WiFi Thermostat RTH9580WF Online   post. This gives instructions on connecting Honeywell thermostats to the internet.

How to Control Honeywell Thermostat With Google Home: Step by Step

1. Run the Google Home app on your Mobile Device

We use an iPad Air computer tablet in this demo.  So we find this app on page four of our iPad’s  Home  screen. But yours may appear in a different spot, depending on how you arrange your pages.

iOS on iPad, displaying its -Home- page. Showing the -Google Home- app.

Then when you run this app, the Google app  Home  screen appears.  It shows a list of your Home devices currently active on your Google account.

The Google Home app -Home- page. Showing the -Main Menu- button.

2. Tap the  Main Menu Button

So find this control at at the bottom of the  Home   screen. It is near the right side corner.

Then touching the   Main Menu  option brings up the  Main Menu   page.  This is where you can control home group members, set up multi room groups, and, access device settings.

3. Touch the  Settings  Menu Item to Continue with How to Control Honeywell Thermostat With Google Home

Then find   Settings   near the left edge of the screen. It is near the center, a little above center, on the  Main Menu  page.

You then should get the   Settings   screen. So this page presents a list of your speakers and other linked devices.  It also gives you the option to control a device.  However, you currently can’t get to the option we’re after unless you scroll down the page a bit.

The -Settings- page.

So, swipe up to scroll down this page until you see the  Add  item, as shown next.

The -Settings- page, showing the -Control Device- option.

4. Touch the  Control Device, Speaker, Group, Service  Item

Touching the   Control Device, Speaker, Group, Service   option then brings up the  Add   page. Here’s where you create a speaker group.

The -Add- page, showing the -Set Up Device- option.

5. Tap the  Set Up Device  Item

Locate the   Set Up Device   option near the left edge of the screen.  It’s currently the first menu item, near the top.

Touching   Set Up Device   brings up the   Set Up   page.  So here, you pick what sort of device to set up.  Now you can choose to set up a native Google Home device (speaker, Chromecast, Etc.). Or set up a device that works with Google, like a Honeywell Total Control Comfort thermostat.

The -Set Up- page. Showing the -Have Something Already Set Up- option.

6. Touch the  Have Something Already Set Up?  Item to Continue with How to Control Honeywell Thermostat With Google Home

This then brings up the  Control Devices   list  page, as shown next.  This screen lists all the device brands that Google Home currently can access and control.

The -Control Devices- list of devices that work with Google Home.

7. Find the  Honeywell Total Connect Comfort Entries

So swipe up to scroll down the  Control Devices  list, until you see the   Honeywell Total Connect Comfort   items.  Note that there are two versions of this ability. One for users in the USA and the other is for international users.

The -Control Devices- list. Showing the US version of the Honeywell Total Control Comfort ability.

8. Tap the  Honeywell Total Connect Comfort US  Ability

In this demo, since, we live in the United States, we tap the red  Honeywell Total Connect Comfort US  item.

The app then displays the Total Connect Comfort log In  screen. So it is prompting you for your TCC account login Id and password.

12.  Touch the  OK  Button to Continue with How to Control Honeywell Thermostat With Google Home

Tapping   OK  on the   Select the Following Thermostat  page then brings up the   Choose Device  page. So here we have a single entry, which is the thermostat we want.

The -Choose Device- page, showing the -Thermostat- just added.

13. Select Your Thermostat

Then, tap the thermostat shown that you want to control by tapping it.

The little circle then fills in with a blue check mark.

The -Choose Device- page. Showing the thermostat we Just added marked checked, and the -Next- button.

14. Touch the  Next  Link

Then tapping  Next  takes you to the   Choose a Home   page. Furthermore, the Google Home app groups devices into virtual collections called homes.  So these allow you to access various devices in each home grouping. This also makes it easier to find them when you have multiple device groups.  Then this means that you can control smart devices at multiple locations.  That is so long as you create a separate home for each place that has devices to control.

Now we created only one home in our account currently.  Furthermore, we do not need another.  So we won’t run through how to do that here. If you have two or more homes set up, you would choose which one to put the thermostat in.

The -Choose a Home- page, showing the -Next- link.

In this demo though, since it’s the only one, the app selects this group by default.  So we can just move on to the next step.

15. Tap the  Next Link

Activating the  Next  link then takes you to the   Where is this Device?  page.

The -Where Is This Device- screen.

So here is where you get to say in which room or area of your home you’ve installed the thermostat.  Indeed they give several pre-defined choices on this screen.  Furthermore you can create your own room name if you scroll down this page.  There, they give you the option to create a custom room name.

16. Assign Your Thermostat a Room

For us though, since our Honeywell thermostat is in the kitchen, we just tapped  Kitchen, as shown next.

The -Where Is This Device- page. Showing the -Kitchen- choice checked, and the -Next- link.

17. Touch the  Next  Link

Tapping  Next   takes us back to the   Home  screen.  Note that now, your thermostat should show up in your the device list there.  But remember that the first time we saw the   Home   page above, no thermostat appeared.  However now, since adding it was successful, it does show.

The Google Home app on iOS displaying its -Home- page. Showing the Honeywell thermostat to control.

18. Test that Google Home can Access your Honeywell Thermostat

Finally, you can see if the Google Home app can now read your thermostat temperature. So to do that, tap its entry icon on the Home page.
