How to Check Battery on JBL Clip 4

Describes how to check battery on JBL Clip 4 by reading the power status lamp.

How to Check Battery on JBL Clip 4: Read the Status Lamp

This speaker has a single LED on its top panel, under the carabiner clip. This displays battery status, whether it’s draining or charging, or whether it’s critically low or not when discharging.  However, it does not tell you the charging progress in terms of charge remaining numbers.  Nor does it say how full the battery is or how much “juice” the battery has left. But it does change color when the battery nears deadness.

1. The Status Lamp is OFF

When you power down the Clip 4 with no charger supplying current to the speaker, this lamp goes dark.  The lamp is also OFF when the charger IS working but the battery is full.

2. The Lamp Shows Battery Recharging Progress

The status lamp lights up red (no flashing) while the speaker charges, as shown in the next picture.   On this speaker, the glowing light is the only visual indication that charging is going on.  But as noted earlier, it does not display how far along the charging is.

Note also that this lamp blinks red when the battery is low. So, you should recharge it next time you can.  It only flashes red when the battery is nearly dead, with no charger present. But when you connect a charger, this red flashing turns to a steady red glow.  Thus, this light never flashes red while the speaker charges.

3. When the Light Goes Out While Charging, Then Charging is Complete

As speaker charging continues, the light keeps glowing red. Then charging is complete when the lamp goes out, or turns white.  It turn off when the speaker is not ON, and turns white when it is ON.

The battery recharge cycle finishes when the speaker status lamp turns off.  Even with the AC charger, the lamp does not glow when battery is full, unless the speaker itself is running.  And in that case, it would glow or flash white.

4. How to Check Battery on JBL Clip 4: This Lamp Is Not Really a Charge Remaining Meter

When unplugged from the charger, what was the charging lamp becomes the battery charge left light.  Well sort of.  If it glows white, then the battery has some amount of play time left, although you cannot tell how much.

The next picture shows a JBL Clip 4, powered ON, with the battery status lamp glowing solid white.  Note though that this light blinks white when the speaker has no pairing.

This light gives very few battery status patterns when not charging. In fact, then only one is when the battery is nearly dead.  Then, it starts flashing red.

Unfortunately, the Portable app does not communicate with this speaker.  So you won’t be able to read its amount of charge there.
