How to Check Sony SRS X11 Battery

Covers how to check the battery on the Sony cube speaker model SRS X11, and also, how to know if the battery’s capacity is shrinking over time.

How to Check Sony SRS X11 Battery, Current Charge

1. First, Turn ON the X11

You won’t be able to infer battery charge status unless the speaker is ON first.

To turn on the unit, press and release the Power-Pairing button, pointed at by the yellow arrow in the last picture.

The small lamp on the front bottom center of the grill should then light white, as we see next. Plus, the speaker makes a two-beep, low-high sound.  If it does not boot, then the battery may be completely dead.

But as long as there’s some energy in the battery, the speaker should power up.  So when it does, go ahead with the next step.

2. Look at the CHARGE Lamp on the X11

Note that this speaker has no battery gauge to read out exactly how much charge still remains.  But you can at least tell if the battery is on the verge of going dead by way of the CHARGE lamp. E.g. When the battery is not critically low, this lamp is dark. But when the speaker has very little charge left, this lamp flashes orange. The next picture shows the lamp location.  It’s on the bottom edge of the back side of the speaker.

How to Check Battery on the Sony SRS X11 Cube Speaker, Overall Battery Condition

When the speaker is new, and using a full power USB charger, the battery charge time is about four and a half (4.5) hours to reach a complete recharge.

And, the fully charged battery should last for around twelve (12) hours of play time before going dead again, when you play it at moderate volume levels. It lasts much less time if you play this unit at maximum volume.

A sign of a failing battery, is that it runs dead too fast, or takes too little or too much time to charge all the way. So if you repeatedly charge your speaker to full, but it only plays for under six hours before shutting off, even at low volumes, then its battery is likely bad. I.e. It cannot hold a full charge anymore.

If the SRS X11 battery takes longer than five hours to completely recharge, this could also mean a failing battery.  It might mean also, that the charger you’re using is not strong enough to recharge the speaker in the specified charge time of 2 hours, or that something is wrong with the speaker itself. So be sure to use a charger that delivers 5 volts at 1.5 amps for fastest charging.

Also, slow charging can happen because your charging cable is too thin.  So for best results, we encourage you to use at least a high-current USB cable (one that easily carries 2.0 amps).
