Covers the JBL Charge firmware update directions. However, we know of no way to upgrade the software on this particular speaker. Indeed we find no firmware downloads for this unit on the JBL web site. Plus, we see no details for this in the included manuals.
So it’s likely that JBL thinks that the speaker works sufficiently well with the original firmware. Thus they do not offer a (perhaps) confusing and complicated update procedure for this older speaker.
Moreover, in our tests, this Charge is still highly reliable. E.g. We experience no bugs, lost connections, distortion, or any other unwanted behaviors. Therefore firmware updating is likely not needed. Indeed, as far as we can tell, updating this speaker is impossible for the average owner.
Finally, a no-update option makes this speaker even easier to use. And it’s nice to see a speaker that works well, right out of the box, and will likely never need updates to fix problems. So if that’s the sort of hassle-free operation you’re looking for in a Bluetooth speaker, then the JBL Charge 1 is for you. It’s a virtually zero-maintenance unit, and the only maintenance it needs is to keep it clean and to exercise the battery periodically.
