We’ve owned the Robertshaw 9415 Non Programmable Digital Thermostat since 2004. We replaced it in 2013, not due to failure of the unit or any dissatisfaction with it. But rather, we replaced it because we upgraded to a programmable thermostat.
At a cost of around $55 on the internet, this seemed a slightly high price for a manual t-stat. Furthermore, the 9415 does click noticeably as it turns the HVAC system on and off. But this was easy to ignore. Why? Because we placed it well away from bedrooms or anywhere that needed quiet. In summary then, below, we offer our impressions of this Robertshaw product.
Robertshaw’s operating instructions were easy to follow. In fact, you can find them printed on the inside of the little switch cover door on the front.
Installation of the 9415 took under a half hour. Furthermore, we only needed a Philips screwdriver. Overall, we found it quite easy to install.
The 9415 has nine screw terminals inside. These supply control for multi-stage heating and cooling systems. Our HVAC system used six of these. But hookup was a breeze when following the provided instructions. This t-stat supports two-stage heating and one-stage cooling systems.
The t-stat has no ground terminal. No need for one, since as this thermostat sports an an all-plastic case. Also, it has no mounting plate. This simplifies and shortens installation a bit. Taking it off the wall though, is a bit harder.
Remembers separate settings for summer and winter modes of operation.
We like the option for setting the temperature differential. This is the difference between temp that the thermostat turns the furnace on, and where it shuts it off. By default, this temp differential is 1 degree. Indeed we like the tight temperature control of the 9415. This, as well as the fact that you can set how tight this control is.
Just three push-buttons (to raise and lower the room temperature set point and to illuminate the back-lit digital display). Then, you have two switches. There is the heat, cool, and off mode setting. Also, you have the fan on-off switch behind a small access door. This makes the Robertshaw 9415 digital thermostat quite easy to operate.
The 9415 responds within several seconds when you change the temperature. That is, it quickly turns on the heater when you raise the temperature. It also turns it off when you lower it. Similar behavior goes for cooling mode.
The Robertshaw 9415 limits the size of the temperature swings in the room. So we got great energy savings in our eight years using this t-stat. This is important when paying for electricity to run central AC, where the savings grow even more.
Features a back-lit, green digital display, which enhances ease of reading, even in the dark.
The 9415 has many features of today’s highly programmable digital thermostats. One important one is the short cycle compressor protection.
Remembers your options through power failures, and does this with no battery.
This over temperature protection shuts furnace off if the room temperature rises too high.
Is a direct replacement for the pre-digital mercury thermostats.
Displays temperatures in user-selectable Fahrenheit or Celsius modes.
You must press the LIGHT-UP button each time to see the display in the dark. We wish Robertshaw gave an option to keep this LED light always-on; like a digital LED clock. Since the back light has but a few LEDs, keeping these ON all the time would draw very little power. Plus, this would mean one less button press anytime you wanted to change the temperature in the dark.
Now so many consumer electronics devices give no audio tone. And the 9415 is like that. Some tones would help when you press the UP and DOWN temperature buttons. No sounds can make use of this digital thermostat harder for the blind. But then again, with so few controls on the 9415, the missing sounds seem no big deal.
Does not automatically switch from heating to cooling mode.
Overall, though it’s non programmable, But it’s ease of use and high reliability pleased us. The unit worked exactly as described in the manuals. Plus, it never caused problems in the eight years we used it. So, we’d recommend the Robertshaw 9415 thermostat. If you want the precision of digital control with the simplicity of mechanical thermostats, get this one. Thus, we rate this thermostat at 93 out of 100.
This unit is still appears for sale on eBay now and then.
