JBL Clip 3 portable speaker package, unpacked, showing its contents.
Covers the JBL Clip 3 firmware update procedure. But we know of no way to do this on this speaker. Furthermore, we currently find no firmware downloads for it on the JBL web site. Neither are there any details for this in the included manuals.
Thus it seems that JBL feels that the Clip 3 works well enough with the original firmware. So they do not provide a (perhaps) confusing and complicated update routine for such a basic speaker.
Indeed in our tests, the speaker is quite reliable. We find no bugs, lost connections, distortion, or anything else bad. The speaker runs cool and its battery life exceeds our expectations. So any firmware update is likely not necessary to fix any excessive power drain. Plus, as far as we can tell, it is impossible for the average consumer to perform without special equipment.
Also, this model costs little. So supporting a firmware update procedure may be out of scope for what JBL intends for this model. They may not want to support any firmware update routine. Why not? Because they may feel that people wouldn’t want to bother with updating cheaper speakers like this one. Instead, it’s just easier to just go out and buy another if they run into problems.
And finally, with any firmware update, there’s a chance of corrupting the software in the speaker. Now if a warranty is in effect, JBL might have to replace many speakers bricked by updates that fail. So for this model, the cost of supporting it to this degree would seem to outweigh the benefits.
