The dark -Power- light on the Sony SRS XB33 speaker.

How to Turn On Sony Speaker

We explain how to turn on the typical Sony speaker here.  Now most Bluetooth speakers have a Power button that Sony prominently places on their units so it’s easy to find.  Indeed, this speaker, this XB33 example, is no exception, as we find its Power button on the top.

There’s also a Power lamp, just behind the Power button, that glows green, blue, or white (depending on the speaker you have) any time the unit is running.

Now we also have the Bluetooth status light, that begins flashing or glowing when the speaker powers up, as we point out below.

Note that all lamps with the possible exception of the CHARGE light are dark when the speaker is OFF.

How to Turn On Sony Speaker

To power up the speaker, press the Power button. Then release it after a quarter second or so.  Also, you needn’t hold it in for much time for the unit to see your press and then turn itself on.

Next, when the unit boots, the Bluetooth status lamp starts blinking or glowing, and the speaker may or may not beep depending on the model.  Many of them sound a ding-dong sort of beep pattern if it pairs to a nearby BT device.  But if it pairs with nothing, then they typically make no sound.

But if pressing the Power button does not turn on the Sony speaker, or if the CHARGE light blinks orange, it could be that you need to recharge your speaker.

So if the unit won’t come on, try connecting a charger to it.  Yes, you can indeed play the speaker as it charges in most cases.

Now with a charger supplying power, this speaker should always power on when you click the Power button.  If not, then the unit may not be getting any juice from it.  So check that the receptacle for the power supply is hot, that the adapter works, that the cable between it and the speaker is not damaged, and that the charger plug is fully seated in the speaker’s USB-C input port.

But if after all these checks the speaker still does not turn on, then the unit itself may be faulty. So in that case, get a new one.
