How to Connect JBL Flip 5 to Alexa

This post demonstrates how to connect JBL Flip 5 to Alexa speakers. Since this pairing happens between the JBL and Alexa devices directly, you need not turn Bluetooth on in the mobile device you’re using to set up this connection.

How to Connect JBL Flip 5 to Alexa

With your JBL Flip 5 powered OFF (status lamp is dark), run through this routine to connect it to your Alexa Echo and Alexa Dot models. We use an iPad Air tablet to set this up.

1. Find the Alexa app on your Mobile Device

We found the app on the iPad Air as shown in the next shot. In this exercise, the app is on the third  Home   screen page, pointed at by the blue arrow.

6. Tap the Alexa Device you Wish to Connect

This takes you to the device-specific settings screen for the speaker you chose.

In this demo, we’re pairing from our  Thomas’s Echo Dot 3rd Gen   speaker to our JBL Flip 5.

This brings up the   Bluetooth Devices   screen, as shown next.

At this point, you’re ready to start a Bluetooth scan by your Alexa speaker for the Flip 5 JBL speaker. You’ve selected an Alexa  in the last step. So, that speaker will be the one that scans for BT devices.

But don’t press the   Pair a New Device   button just yet. We must first power up the JBL Flip 5, and turn on its Bluetooth pairing mode.

8. Turn On your BT Speaker to Continue with How to Connect JBL Flip 5 to Alexa

Put aside your mobile device for a moment, and turn on the JBL Flip 5 by quickly pressing its   Power   button. See this circled in green, in the next picture.

The Power switch then lights up and the speaker then boots up.

But since our Alexa Echo Dot does not know about this speaker, the Flip will not pair with it without your help the first time.

9. Put your Speaker into Bluetooth Pairing Mode

Now, to allow Alexa to find your JBL Flip 5, place the Flip into Bluetooth discovery / pairing mode. For that, press and release the Bluetooth button. Find this button in the next picture, pointed at by the green arrow.

When you press the  Bluetooth Pairing Mode  button, the speaker makes a twice repeating group of eight guitar notes. Also, the status lamp on the front changes to fast flashing white.

The screen with the blue  Pair a New Device   button should still be showing, as in the next screenshot.

This starts your Alexa scanning for any nearby Bluetooth devices that are themselves in BT pairing mode. Now your JBL Flip 5 is in the pairing / discovery mode. So it should shortly appear in the Alexa app.

After a short pause, you should see something like the screen we got. Shown next.

In our demo, the app found our JBL Flip 5, named aptly,   JBL FLIP 5. See this pointed out by the  green arrow in the last screenshot.

12. Find your JBL Flip 5 on the Discovered Devices List

See the screenshot above.

13. Finally, Pair your Alexa with your JBL Flip 5

Pair to the Flip 5 JBL by tapping the listed speaker on the  Bluetooth Setup  screen, shown in the last screenshot above.

Your Alexa speaker then pairs with the JBL Flip 5.

The app then displays the Select a Previously Paired Device screen then looks something like the following.

Also, the JBL Flip 5 makes the Speaker Paired sound (the three ascending guitar notes). Note furthermore, that the Bluetooth symbol to the left of the listed speaker item turns blue when pairing is established, as shown in the last screenshot.

The JBL Flip 5 is now connected with your Alexa speaker. Its Bluetooth light glows solid white to signal that successful pairing is in effect, as shown next.

14. Done with How to Connect JBL Flip 5 to Alexa !

We can now ask Alexa to play music via the smart speaker, and those tunes will come out of this JBL Flip 5. Be sure though, to speak to the Alexa speaker when making requests, and not the JBL Flip 5.  Even though the Flip is now paired with Alexa, the Alexa is still the speaker that receives voice commands through its internal far field microphones.
