First, we recommend recharging the JBL Charge 3 with the included JBL USB charger. Why? Because this power adapter meets the speaker’s amperage needs, and is provided by JBL besides.  Presumably, JBL thinks that this is a well-matched AC charger.  So, we won’t buck any systems here, although in a pinch, you could fully recharge this power bank speaker with other non JBL wall adapters.  But exploring those options is beyond the scope of this post.

JBL Charge 3 Charging, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When is it Time to charge the Charge 3 JBL Speaker?

You know that it’s time to charge the JBL Charge 3 when the battery status gauge near the bottom on the front of the speaker shows a single flashing red light, or simply, when the speaker stops playing. 🙂

When you see that flashing red, connect the orange USB jack included with the speaker between the Charge 3 and the power adapter. Then, plug the supply into a working AC outlet, to keep the music going.

Finally after four hours or so, your Charge 3 fully recharges. Then, you can play it again for roughly twenty hours before it runs dead again.

What’s the JBL Charge 3 Charging Time?

This speaker fully recharges in approximately four and a half hours, depending on the state of the power bank battery when charging begins, and the charger used to juice it up. We assume that you recharge this speaker with the charger that accompanies it.  Other AC USB chargers may take more time to fully recharge the speaker.

Why Does my JBL Charge 3 Keep Shutting Off?

An older battery often causes unexpected shutdowns, as it can no longer output the minimum current the speaker needs to work properly.  Installing a new battery can solve this problem.  We suggest though, that you get with a qualified electronics technician to perform this battery installation.

What Does the JBL Charge 3 Red Light Flashing Mean?

When you see the red light blinking on the Charge 3’s battery status gauge, the battery has very little electricity left.  So the speaker will shut off within an hour (approximately) if not recharged. Note though that this light never flashes red when a working charger power supply is connected and powered on.  As you recharge the Charge 3 from a completely dead state, this lamp switches from flashing red to blinking white.

JBL Charge 3 Charging, Step-by-Step Instructions

1. For Best Results, Use the Included USB Power Adapter

As stated earlier, we’re using the JBL USB wall charger AC adapter included with this speaker, as shown next.

At least one of the battery status lamps lights up on the Charge Three when you apply charging power. There are five lamps on the Charge 3 that come on in succession as battery recharging progresses.

5. Allow the JBL Charge 3 to Recharge Until All Battery Power Lights Go Off

Battery charging is almost complete when all but the last of the battery status lights light solid. The last one continues to blink for several minutes more to top off the charge, as shown next.

7. Fully  Push Closed the Water Resistant Port Door

Note that unless this power port opening flap is completely closed, water could enter the input and output connector ports area, and likely damage the Charge 3’s electronic components inside. So, take great care to correctly seat the port door on this speaker  This way, you get the full water resistance protection the speaker was designed to offer.

See how this port door looks when fully closed and sealed in the next picture.

8. Charging JBL Charge 3 Speaker Power Bank Done!

We have now fully charged our JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker. Note that the battery status gauge just after turning on the Charge 3 following a full recharge. All lamps glow, meaning that the speaker is indeed charged to full, as shown in the next picture.

Repeat this recharging exercise every twenty hours of music play to keep the battery power bank in ready-for-use condition. We charge ours when the battery status gauge lights show just one lamp glowing.  Keeping this speaker charged is important if you charge your phones / tablets from it.

Charge 3 Restart Instructions, How to Restart JBL Charge 3 Speaker

Use these Charge 3 restart instructions to help correct some unusual symptoms that your JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker may experience from time to time.

Restarting and Resetting  JBL Bluetooth Speaker Not the Same !

Also not that RESTARTING the Charge 3 speaker differs from RESETTING it back to factory settings.  By restarting, we mean just rebooting this JBL 3.

But resetting does much more than simply restarting.  More precisely, resetting erases any stored Bluetooth settings, previously paired devices, and any other user specific data in the Charge 3.  Thus, resetting this Bluetooth speaker, as opposed to restarting it, needs more work afterwards to get it back up and running.

Therefore, do avoid confusing the words restart and reset.  Recovering from a speaker reset is not terribly hard in this case however.  All you have to do, is re pair any devices to it manually for the first time after reset.  Why?  Because after a speaker reset, any memorized Bluetooth speaker entries for this unit on your mobile devices will no longer work.  So you need to establish new, valid pairings.

Use the Power Button for Charge 3 Restart

Picture of the JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker, powered On, not paired. Showing the glowing white power button highlighted.

Charge 3 Restart Instructions: JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker, powered On, not paired. Showing the glowing white power button highlighted.

The JBL Charge 3 speaker indeed sports a Power ON / OFF button.  So, you restart these Bluetooth speakers by pressing and holding the Power button until the lights on the speaker go off.  Then, once the speaker powers down, press and release the Power button once more.  Then, when the Charge 3 finishes starting up, and the lamp in the Power button flashes slowly blue or white, then successful Charge 3 restart is finished.

Let Speaker Battery Run Down if Charge 3 is Unresponsive

Picture of the JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth rechargeable speaker battery status gauge at eighty percent of full charge.

Charge 3 Restart Instructions: JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth rechargeable speaker battery status gauge at eighty percent of full charge.

In rare cases, pressing the power button may not shut off the Charge 3.  The speaker may freeze or lock up while powered up.  In that case, disconnect the charging cable if charging your Charge 3, and allow the speaker to run until the battery goes dead.  When the internal battery drains completely, this effectively powers down the Charge 3.

Then, once all lights on the Charge 3 go dark, including the power button and battery gauge lamps, connect the speaker to a charger again.   See some of the Charge 3 lights shown in the previous pictures.  They’ll all go out when the battery runs down to complete discharge.

Then wait for perhaps fifteen minutes until you build up a bit of charge in the battery once more.  At that point, you can try powering up the speaker again.  Hopefully, any erratic behavior from the speaker that prompted you to restart it, has now disappeared.

5. Done!

The JBL Charge 3 reset is now finished. You may now pack it up for sale, or pair it again with your favorite Bluetooth devices.

The JBL Charge 3 will no longer automatically pair with any previously paired, in range Bluetooth device in Bluetooth pairing mode. So, to restore automatic Bluetooth pairing, you’ll need to forget the previously paired Charge 3 listed in the Bluetooth devices section of your source device settings.  Once you do that, then manually pair the Charge 3 with that device again if so desired. Then after that, any time that both speaker and that device have Bluetooth turned on, pairing with automatically take place once more.

Pairing JBL Charge 3 with Google Home Instructions

This post demonstrates how pairing JBL Charge 3 with Google Home smart speakers works. These include the original, mini, and max Google Home versions. Since this pairing happens between the Charge 3 and the Google speakers directly, you need not turn Bluetooth on in the mobile device you’re using to establish this pairing.

Pairing JBL Charge 3 with Google Home Smart Speakers

With your JBL Charge 3 powered off (power button is dark), run through this routine to pair it to your Google Home Mini, Original, or Max smart speaker. We’re using an iPad Air tablet to set up this pairing. In this demo, we’re pairing with a Google Home Mini. But the routine is similar for the other Google smart speaker products.

Now, to the procedure.

1. Find the Google Home App on your Mobile Device

We found the Home app on our iOS iPad Air as shown in the next screenshot. In our case, this app is on the third home screen page. It’s pointed at by the purple arrow.

Pairing JBL Charge 3 with Google Home smart speakers. Picture of the Google Home App entry, as shown on the iOS home screen.

2. Run the Google Home App

The app displays its Home screen as shown in the next screenshot.

3. Tap the Hamburger Control

Find the hamburger item in the top left corner of the screen. This is pointed at by the purple arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Google Home app’s main menu, as shown in the next screenshot.

4. Tap the Devices Option on the Main Menu

The Devices option is pointed at by the bright purple arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Devices screen, as shown in the next screenshot. From here, choose which smart speaker device you wish to pair with your JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker. We had to scroll down on this screen to locate our Google Home Mini, named Office Speaker.

Picture of the Google Home Mini Speaker, as displayed in the Google Home App, showing in the Devices list, with its Device Menu location highlighted.

5. Tap the Hamburger Control on the Google Home Speaker you Wish to Pair to your JBL Charge 3

Find the hamburger control near the top right corner of each speaker card, as shown in the last screenshot.

This brings up the selected device’s control menu, as shown next.

Picture of the Google Home app on iOS, with a Google Home Mini device control menu displaying, with the Settings Item in that menu highlighted.

6. Tap the Settings Menu Item

The Settings menu item is circled in bright purple in the last picture.

Tapping Settings takes you to the device-specific settings screen for the speaker you chose, as shown next.

7. Scroll Down to the Device Settings Section

Scroll down the Device Settings screen, until you see the Default Speaker item. We’ve pointed at this with a blue arrow in the next picture.

At this point, you’re ready to start a Bluetooth scan by your Google Home speaker. You’ve selected the Home speaker to pair with in step 5 above. So, that Google speaker will be the one that scans for Bluetooth devices like the JBL Charge 3.

But don’t press the Pair Bluetooth Speaker item button in the last screenshot just yet. We must first power up your JBL Charge 3 speaker and put it into pairing discovery mode.

9. Turn On your JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth Speaker

Put down your mobile device for a bit.

Then turn on the JBL Charge 3 by quickly pressing its Power button. See this pointed at by the green arrow in the next picture.

Picture of the JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker, powered off. Showing the Power button highlighted.

The speaker then powers up.

But since our Google Home Mini does not know about this speaker, and the Charge 3 does not know about the Mini, the Charge 3 will not pair with the Mini right away. Thus, the light that comes on in the Charge 3 power switch denotes this not-paired state by glowing solid white, as shown next.

Picture of the JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker, powered On, not paired. Showing the glowing white power button highlighted.

Note that your Charge 3 may be flashing blue if you’ve never paired it with a device since the last factory reset. In that case, skip the next step (Step 10) and pick up with Step 11.

10. Put your JBL Bluetooth Speaker into Discovery Mode

Now, to allow the Google Home smart speaker to find your JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker, place the Charge 3 into Bluetooth discovery mode. To activate pairing discovery mode, press and let go of the Bluetooth button, as shown in the next picture, pointed at by the green arrow.

When you press the Bluetooth Discovery Mode button, the Charge 3 makes a repeating single pluck guitar note sound several times. Also, the power button changes from a solid white glow to flashing blue. See this next.

11. Go Back to your Mobile Device

The screen with the blue Pair Bluetooth Speaker option should still be showing, as in the next screenshot.

12. Tap the Pair Bluetooth Speaker Item

This starts your Google Home speaker scanning for any nearby Bluetooth devices that are themselves in Bluetooth discovery mode. Your Charge 3 is now in Bluetooth discovery mode. So your Google Home should find it.  If it doesn’t, then move the speakers closer to each other and try again.

The next screenshot shows the Bluetooth scanning in progress.

After a short pause, your Google Home should find the JBL Charge 3 portable speaker, and list it as shown next, as pointed at by the dark purple arrow.

In our demo, the Google Home Mini speaker found our JBL Charge 3, named JBL Charge 3.

13. Tap your JBL Charge 3 on the Discovered Bluetooth Devices List to Pair It

See the screenshot above. If Google Home found more than one device, you’ll have to tap the one you want. A blue check mark then appears beside the device you chose.

Now our scan found the JBL Charge 3. Just one device. So ours was selected by default, as the blue check mark shows above.

14. Tap the Done Item

Tapping Done causes our Google Home speaker then paired with the Charge 3 speaker.

The Google Home app then took us back to its Choose a Default Speaker for Music and Audio screen, as shown next.

Screenshot of the Google Home app on iOS, displaying its -Choose a Default Speaker- screen. The JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker is set as default speaker.

At that time,, the JBL Charge 3 makes the Speaker Paired sound (the three ascending guitar notes). Note the blue check mark to the left of the new default speaker in the last screenshot.  The now-paired speaker is pointed at by the dark purple arrow.

The JBL Charge 3 speaker is now paired with your Google Home. It’s power button glows solid blue. This means that successful pairing is under way, as shown next.

15. Done!

We can now ask the Google Home assistant to play music on our Office Speaker Google Home Mini, and those tunes will play on this wonderful sounding JBL Charge 3 power bank speaker.

Note though, that only the media you request actually plays through the Charge III. The Google Assistant voice sounds however, still come directly from the Google Home smart speaker. Also, be sure to speak directly to your Google Home, and not to the Bluetooth speaker, when making voice requests.

Enjoy!
