Pairing JBL Flip 2 with Alexa Echo Speakers Instructions

This post demonstrates ways of pairing JBL Flip 2 with Amazon Alexa Echo speakers. These pairing instructions include the generation 1 and generation 2 Echo Dot, and the Gen 1 and 2 Echo tower speakers. For this demo, we’ll show how to pair with our Amazon Echo Dot speaker.  Since this Bluetooth pairing happens between the Flip 2 and the Echo devices directly, you need not turn Bluetooth on in the mobile device you’re using to set up this link.

Pairing JBL Flip 2 with Amazon Alexa Echo Speakers

With your JBL Flip 2 powered off (power button is dark), run through this routine to pair it to your Amazon Echo speakers. We’re using an iPad Air tablet to set up this pairing.

1. Locate the Amazon Alexa app on your Mobile Device

We found the app on our iOS iPad Air as shown in the next screenshot. In our case, the Alexa app is on the third home screen page. It’s pointed at by the blue arrow.

3. Tap the Hamburger Control

Find the hamburger item in the top left corner of the screen. This is pointed at by the blue arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Alexa app’s main menu, as shown in the next screenshot.

4. Tap the Settings Option on the Main Menu

The Settings option is pointed at by the blue arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Settings screen, as shown in the next screenshot.

From here, choose which Alexa Echo device you wish to pair with your JBL Flip 2 Bluetooth speaker.  The blue arrow in the next picture points at the Bedroom Dot speaker that we’re pairing with.

6. Tap the Bluetooth Item

Find the Bluetooth option pointed at by the blue arrow in the last screenshot.

This brings up the Bluetooth Devices screen, as shown next.

At this point, you’re ready to start a Bluetooth scan by your Echo talking speaker. You’ve selected this speaker in the last step. So, that Dot will be the one that scans for Bluetooth devices.

But don’t press the Pair a New Device button just yet. We must first power up your JBL Flip 2 portable speaker and put it into pairing discovery mode.

The speaker then powers up.

But since our Echo Dot does not know about this Bluetooth speaker yet, the Flip 2 will not pair with it automatically. Thus, the Bluetooth light that shows as dark after you power up the speaker, advertises this not-paired state, as shown next.

8. Put your JBL Flip 2 Bluetooth Speaker into Discovery Mode

Now, to allow the Echo Dot to find your JBL Flip 2, place it in Bluetooth discovery mode. To do that, press and release the Bluetooth button on the Flip 2, as pointed at by the green arrow in the next picture.

10. Tap the Blue Pair a New Device Button

This starts your Echo scanning for any nearby Bluetooth devices that are themselves in Bluetooth discovery mode. Since your Flip 2 is now in discovery mode, the Echo speaker should find it.

After a short pause, you should see something like the screen we got. Shown next.

In our demo, the Alexa app found our JBL Flip 2 speaker, named  JBL Flip 2.

11. Find your JBL Flip 2 on the Discovered Devices List

See the screenshot above. Our scan found one device. It found the JBL Flip 2. So, we located our Flip 2 speaker in the list, as pointed at by the blue arrow in that picture.

12. Finally, Pair your Echo Speaker with your JBL Flip 2 Portable Speaker

Pair to the JBL Flip 2 by tappng the listed speaker in the Bluetooth Setup screen, shown in the last screenshot above.

The Echo then pairs with the Flip 2 (“JBL Flip 2” in this demo). The Alexa App’s Bluetooth Settings screen then changes to look something like the following.

Also, the JBL Flip 2 makes the Speaker Paired sound (the three ascending tones). Note that the Bluetooth symbol to the left of the listed speaker item turns blue in the last screenshot.

The speaker is now paired with your Echo Alexa speaker. It’s Bluetooth button glows solid white to indicate successful pairing, as shown next.

JBL Flip 2 Charging Instructions, How To Recharge

Here, we offer our JBL Flip 2 Charging Instructions for this popular Bluetooth speaker.  Indeed, you can charge these JBL Flip 2 wireless speakers easily through the exposed USB charge port. To summarize: First, select an strong enough USB car or wall adapter. Why this? Because the Flip 2 does not come with this standard so far as we know.

Plus, the Flip 2 needs a medium power USB power source to charge fully in the shortest time.

Next then, connect a micro USB cable between the JBL Flip 2 and that adapter. Then, plug the power supply into a working wall outlet.

Finally after a few to four hours, your JBL speaker will fully recharge. Then, you’ll be able to play it again for up to four hours at mid volume levels, before you must charge it again.

2. Find the Flip 2 USB Charge Port

Locate the micro USB charging port on the port side of the speaker, as shown next.  Unlike the later models of the JBL Flip speaker line, the USB charge port on the JBL Flip 2 is exposed.  Not hidden behind any waterproofing hatch. So, needless to say, the Flip 2 is neither waterproof nor splashproof.

5. Plug the USB Power Adapter into a Working Outlet

Now that the Flip 2 and our RavPower adapter are connected together, we plug the RavPower into a working AC outlet, as shown next. In this demo, we’ve plugged ours into a surge protector power strip. Plus, we ran our speaker completely dead before this demo.

At least one of the battery status lamps lights up and blinks on the Flip 2 when you apply enough USB charging power, and its battery has discharged completely.

Further, there are five lamps that light in succession as the speaker battery charging progresses, as shown in the next picture.

7. Unplug the USB Charge Cable from the JBL Flip 2

As soon as you can, disconnect the charge cable from the speaker after charging completes.  We suggest against leaving the speaker connected to power for very long, as this helps preserve battery recharging ability.

8. Done!

We have now fully charged our JBL Flip 2 portable Bluetooth speaker. Note that the battery charge status gauge just after turning on the Flip 2 after a full recharge. All lamps glow as shown in the step 6 pictures above, meaning that the speaker battery is now fully charged.

9. Repeat Battery Recharging as Needed

Repeat this charging process every three to five hours of music play through the Flip 2, to keep its battery in top condition. We charge ours when the battery status meter lights show only one light glowing, as shown next.

JBL Flip 2 Pairing Instructions, Pairing Flip 2 JBL Speaker

This post gives JBL Flip 2 pairing instructions. These directions work with both iOS and Android mobile phones and computers, including the iPhone, Galaxy, iPod, and the iPad Air smart phones and tablets.

JBL Flip 2 Pairing Instructions

With your JBL Flip 2 powered off (power button is dark), run through this routine to pair it to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch iOS mobile device. We’re using an iPad Air tablet for this demo.

1. Navitate to the Home Screen on your iOS Device

Press the Home button to get to the mobile iOS device’s Home screen.

2. Find the Settings App

We found ours on the second page of the iOS home screen on our iPad Air running iOS 11.4, as shown next.

3. Bring up the Settings App

Tap the Settings app icon.

The iOS device then displays the first page of its settings, as shown in the next step.

4. Go to Bluetooth Settings

Our Bluetooth settings screen displays as follows. Note that our Bluetooth is enabled here. But since our  JBL Flip 2 speaker is currently powered OFF and not in Bluetooth discovery mode, it does not show up in the Bluetooth devices list. Also, we don’t see it since we’ve never paired our Flip 2 with the iPad Air before. See this as shown in this list of previously paired Bluetooth devices, shown next.

The speaker then powers up.

But since our iPad does not know about this speaker, the Flip 2 will not pair with it automatically. The Bluetooth pairing light pointed at by the green arrow in the next picture is OFF.  This denotes this not-paired state.
