Factory Reset Amazon Echo Instructions, How to Hard Reset

You may wish to factory reset Amazon Echo  smart speakers.  Why?   Because maybe you’d like to sell your old one. Or perhaps you just want to connect your Echo to a new Amazon account, or to different WiFi internet. So, with those tasks in mind, this post details resetting the Amazon Echo line of smart speakers.  For that,  do the steps next.  We do not cover Echo Dots, Spots, or Plus speakers here.  Find posts for some of these in the Related Posts section below.

Resetting unlinks the Amazon Echofrom its current Alexa account.  Reset also assures that the Echo forgets its current Wi-Fi settings.

Warning: After the reset, your Amazon Echo speaker will not work until set up again.

Also, before factory resetting, try power cycling, as follows.

  • Power off the unit for fifteen seconds. Do this by unplugging its power cable either from the wall outlet, or from the unit itself.
  • Wait for a quarter minute.
  • Then plug it back in.
  • Wait for the speaker to boot.

This often restores proper function without the headaches of a full reset.

But if power cycling does not fix the speaker, then read on for the proper factory reset procedure.  A hard reset often restores correct working to the Amazon Echos.

Amazon Echo Reset Button, Where to Find It

The Amazon Echo reset button on the generation one (original) Alexa Echo smart speaker is found on the underside of the unit.  See this pointed at by the purple arrow in the next picture. The button is easy to get to, once you turn the speaker upside down. Just sit the speaker, top side down, on a soft, dry cloth to avoid scratching the control panel on its top surface.

The reset button is inside a small hole there. To press it, insert the end of a small to medium-sized paper clip.  Press GENTLY, just enough to activate the button.  Keep pressing for five seconds to start factory default reset process.

They put the button well away from where someone might press it by accident.  Fortunately though, these days, even if you did reset the speaker by mistake, recovering it is pretty simple.  Why?  Because Amazon saves speaker settings data in the cloud.  Thus, you can quickly set it up again after a unintentional reset. How?  Well, when you set it up, Alexa downloads this data to the speaker again. True.  Some data you must re enter manually.  But most of it you need not enter from scratch again.

Echo Gen 2 Reset Button, Where to Find It

This post shows where the reset button is on the Echo Gen 2 smart speaker. On this speaker though, we find no separate reset button.  Instead, you press the Mic Off and Volume Down (-) buttons on the top of the unit are pressed and held down at the same time to start a factory default reset.  See these in the following picture.

Picture of the Amazon Echo Gen 2 Smart Speaker Reset Button Location. It's a Button Combination of the Mic Mute and Volume Down buttons on the top of the speaker., as circled in purple

Unlike the earlier version, the generation 1 original Echo, there is no reset button in a pin hole on the bottom of this unit.  This means that accidental reset is a possibility with this later model.  Why?  Because the Mic OFF and Vol Down buttons are very close together.  So it would be easy to press them both at the same time.  But a short press does not reset the speaker.  Rather, you must hold both these buttons in for a couple seconds.  And even then, the speaker asks if you really want to reset before it actually does reset.  So putting the reset function on the top doesn’t hurt anything that we see.  People still will not reset it by accident very often.
