How to Reset Echo Alexa Smart Speakers

A full reset Echo Alexa routine is needed sometimes.  Why?   Because perhaps you desire to sell your old Echo device. Or perhaps you just want to connect your speaker to a new Amazon account, or to another WiFi network. So, with those needs to consider, this post details how to reset Echo Alexa assistant speakers.  For that, follow the steps below.  We  cover Echo Alexa Gens 1 and 2, the Echo Spot, and the Dot Gens 1, 2, and 3.  We do not however cover the Echo Plus, Show, or Input devices here.  Not yet anyhow.

Resetting unlinks the Echo Alexa from its current Amazon account.  Resetting also assures that the Echo speaker erases its Wi-Fi settings from internal memory.

Warning: After Echo Alexa reset, your speaker will not function until set up anew.

Also, you can sometimes avoid set up time after resetting. How?  Before resetting, try powering down the Echo Alexa for ten to fifteen seconds. E.g. Unplug its power cable from the wall outlet.  Wait five to ten seconds.  Then plug it back in  again.  Powering down then up, often brings back proper function without the headaches running a full reset. But if this does not fix the speaker, then read on for how to do a full Echo Alexa reset.

Or, you can set it up once again on your existing account. Once the light ring turns orange, the unit stays in setup mode until someone runs the setup routine. The Echo will not function until properly set up and linked to an Amazon account.

Echo Sub Reset Instructions, How to Hard Factory Reset

Here, we show the Echo Sub reset instructions for this Alexa smart sub woofer to restore it back to factory default operation.  But why would you ever do this?  Well, you may decide to sell or give your Echo Sub to another person.  Or link it to a different Amazon account.  Or connect it to a different WiFi network.  In all these scenarios, factory resetting is the best way to clean out all old account data from the Sub.  Resetting gets it ready to use on a new account and / or WiFi network.  Resetting also breaks any stereo speaker pairing in which the Echo Sub was a part.

To reset the Echo Sub and unlink it from its current Amazon Alexa account, follow the instructions below.

Note that if you’re just trying to fix erratic Echo Sub behavior, you may not need to do a complete default factory reset. So, before resetting the Sub, try powering it down for fifteen seconds.  That is, disconnect its AC cable either from the wall receptacle, or from the speaker.  Best though to unplug it from the wall.

Then, wait ten to fifteen seconds.

Finally, plug it back in. Rebooting often restores normal operation. But if not, read on for the proper hard reset procedure.

Once you run Echo Sub reset, you’ll no longer be able to control the Sub from the Echo account where you last set it up.  To regain control via that account, run through the setup procedure again.  There, relink the Echo Sub to that account again via the Alexa app.

Reset Echo Sub Instructions, How To

1. Attach Wall Power Cable

First, connect this sub woofer Echo speaker to its AC power adapter cord, as shown next.

Picture of the Alexa Echo Sub woofer, showing the rear view with its Action button highlighted. Echo Sub reset.

Alexa Echo Sub woofer, showing the rear view with its Action button highlighted. Echo Sub reset.

2. Next, Plug the Power Cable into a Live AC Outlet

Then, wait for the Echo Sub to finish powering up.  It’s done when the Action button on the back either goes completely dark, or starts flashing orange and yellow.

3. Next, Press and Hold the Action Button for 5 to 10 Seconds

Depress the Action button until the light dot in its middle turns orange.  Note that this Sub Echo speaker does not announce that it’s in setup mode. Indeed, the orange-yellow flashing Action button is the only indication you get that the speaker has in fact reset and entered setup mode.  See the orange Action button shown next.

Picture of the Echo Sub woofer rear panel, speaker in Setup mode, showing the orange action button highlighted. Echo Sub reset.

Echo Amazon Sub woofer rear panel, speaker in Setup mode, showing the orange action button highlighted. Echo Sub reset.

4. Finally, What Happens After Echo Sub Reset?

Your Echo Sub sub woofer is now restored to its factory default settings and has entered setup mode, as shown in the last picture, with the Action button flashing orange and yellow.

Pack it Up or Set it Up Again

After Echo Sub reset, you may now transfer your Echo Sub to another person without worry that they’ll have access to the Alexa settings on your personal Amazon account. Or, you can set up the sub again on your own account. But if selling, we suggest that you pack the sub woofer in its original carton as shown next, for safest shipping, as shown in the next picture.

Note that if you want to add the Sub back to the same Amazon account it was before Echo Sub reset and connect it to the same WiFi network, press and hold in the Action button one more time for five to ten seconds.  This reloads the Echo Sub with the settings prior to resetting.  For this to work however, you must put the Echo Sub in range of at least one of the WiFi networks you’ve saved to your Amazon account.

Factory Reset Alexa Instructions, Dot, Spot, Echo

A complete factory reset Alexa Echo routine is necessary at times.  Why?   Because maybe you’d like to sell your old Alexa device. Or perhaps you just want to connect your speaker assistant to a new Amazon account, or to different WiFi. So, with those tasks in mind, this post details factory resetting the Alexa line of smart speakers.  For that, follow the steps next.  We  cover Echo Gens 1 and 2, the Echo Spot, and the Dot Gens 1, 2, and 3.  We do not however cover the Echo Plus, Show, or Input devices here.

Resetting unlinks the Amazon Alexa from its current Amazon account.  Factory reset also assures that the Alexa speaker forgets its current Wi-Fi settings.

Warning: After the factory reset, your Alexa speaker will not work until set up again.

Also, to save yourself some set up time, before factory resetting, try powering off the Alexa for fifteen seconds, by disconnecting its power cable either from the wall outlet, or from the unit itself.  Wait for a quarter minute, and then connect it again.  Powering off then on, often restores proper operation without the headaches of a full factory reset. However, if power cycling does not fix the speaker, then read on for the proper factory reset procedure that often restores correct operation to the Alexa speakers.

Set Up Again, or Pack Up

You may now unplug, pack, and give your Echo 2 to someone else.  Do not fear that they’ll have access to the Alexa settings on your personal Amazon account. They will not.  Factory reset erased those prior values from the Echo 2 speaker.

Or, you can set it up once again on your existing account. Once the light ring turns orange, the unit stays in setup mode until someone runs the setup routine. The Echo 2 will not work until properly set up and linked to an Amazon account.

Factory resetting Alexa smart speakers like the Echo Dot models, also fixes many bizarre  behaviors they sometimes act out. So here thus, we give Alexa factory reset Echo Dot instructions.  We think they’ll be useful because with new versions of these speakers coming out annually, people will likely sell their older models in large numbers.  So they’ll want to know how to completely wipe any personal data out of the Echo Dots before they get rid of them.   Factory resetting does just that.  It prepares the speakers for resale to another person.  We cover all three current models of the Alexa Echo Dot speakers in this piece.

Here, we give the reset procedures for all three models of the Echo Dot, with the latest model (the Echo Dot 3rd generation speaker) listed first, then the older generation 2 model, and finally, the oldest generation 1 Echo Dot.
